The Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers in conjunction with the Federation of Welsh Anglers were asked to get some coaching sessions off the ground on the barrage.

Having attended a meeting with the Port Authority and Cardiff Council we were able to offer 3 free Coaching sessions which are to run Jan 13th, 08.00-12pm, Feb 10th 08.00-12pm and March 15th, 10.00am-2pm. Booking in with Gareth Davies on 0787 6555334 or Mike Dixon 0790 0966163, is advisable as we can only cater for 30 anglers at present.

The day started off wet and windy with a good blow running down the Barrage from the West, which made the day interesting but none the less very enjoyable!

With 17 anglers all chomping at the bit to get going Gareth Davies (Coaching & Development Officer, WFSA) gave a safety talk explaining what’s expected of all anglers for the day, that includes how to handle fish and keeping the environment clean.

Fishing was slow to start but after a while with some good coaching fish started to come onto the barrage. Tactics were standard rigs mainly 2 or 3 hook flappers with hook sizes of around 1/0 or 2/0. Rods were varying in length and size with pier, uptiders and Beach casters being the order of the day. Reels came in all shapes and sizes most were fixed spool with some Multipliers also being used of around 6500 sizes which are ideal for use around the barrage.

Highlight of the day was Darren Mills with a 2lb 2oz codling, not the biggest fish in the world but his smile was.
