A SCHOOL fishing competition in The Netherlands, which was organised by Beet-Sportvissersmagazine, had to be cancelled because animal rights activists threatened to disturb the event.

The competition was supposed to be fished at 40 different locations throughout the Netherlands and close to 2000 children had signed up for the event.

On a website, animal rights activists threatened to go on to the waters where the competition was fished with rowing boats and to shoot at the children with water pistols.

The competition was an initiative to introduce more children to fishing and to teach them how to handle fish with care.
