LEVAS Championship Match 19, the final match of the season which was also for the Fletcher Cup and the Christmas “Fur & Feather” match, was held on a very cold, frosty but clear and sunny morning on the Kingfisher Lake at Beechwood Park. As usual there was an excellent attendance.
Fortunately the lake was ice free, but unfortunately for some of the competitors the bulk of the fish appeared to have settled at the far end of the lake, all of the top three between pegs 21 and 24 of the 40 peg lake.
Rob Pembridge continued his recent sparking form with yet another excellent display to win the Turkey top prize. Fishing peg 24 with double caster as bait, Rob soon found carp, and mainly fishing the well past the middle of the lake he caught fish to around 7-00 in weight to put a magnificent 112-04 on the scales to win.
Normally Rob’s weight would have put him well clear of the field, but on this occasion Steve Hoult (peg 24) pushed him close. Steve alternated between double maggot and pellet which he fished at 7m at first and then at 13m as the fish “backed off”, and catching carp to around 6-00 in weight ended with 108-12 for second place.
Guest Paul Skinner (peg 21) took third place with 68-12, followed by Dave Lewis (peg 16) with 45-04 for fourth place, Dave Cotterill (peg 28) 29-00 for fifth, and Les Smedley in sixth with 25-08 from peg 31.
The Fur & Feather prizes will be distributed on Friday 23 December from 7pm at the Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Club, when light refreshments will be served to those attending and their guests.
Four of the top six ended the top five places in the Championship, demonstrating their strong form (and good drawing) in the final match. Dave Cotterill has regained the title with 252 points, ahead of Rob Pembridge (218), Paul Richardson (206), Les Smedley and Steve Hoult (both on 205 points), Steve Talbot taking sixth with 203.
