LEVAS’s Championship Match 15, also for the Kathleen Smith Cup, was fished on the Penninsular Lake at Blake Hall Fishery near Cheadle, and being a joint match with Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Angling Club there was another bumper turnout on a cool but clear Autumn day with a brisk ENE wind.
As is often the case when the wind is from an easterly quarter, the match was rather a dour affair, and although there were fish caught from all around the lake, it was nearly an hour before the first fish was landed and actual numbers of fish caught were low although the size was good.
Bill Peach continued his great form on the venue by recording a good win. Bill, fishing peg 55, concentrated on two different approaches, bomb and pellet at 25-30m and method feeder at 50+m. The bomb failed to produce but Bill caught the odd carp throughout the match on the method feeder fished at distance to end with a creditable 46-00.
On peg 63 towards the narrow end of the lake, Neil Stevenson, a regular on the venue, fished the match throughout with his favoured method of bomb and pellet to take second place with 38-06, Nigel Brailsford (peg 45) taking third place from peg 45 with 37-00. Nigel caught is first two fish on method feeder and the remainder on straight bomb and pellet fished over the same line.
Dave McPate (peg 45) filled fourth place with a four carp catch of 34-06 taken on method feeder, Soldiers’ angler Paul Skinner taking fifth place with 33-02 from peg 35 thanks mainly to a superb common carp weighing 19-02. Another consistent angler on the venue, Andy Edwards, filled sixth place with 31-08 from peg 38.
With the Championship Points approaching its conclusion (only four matches to go now), Dave Cotterill retains his lead and now stands on 209 (13 matches counting). Paul Richardson and Rob Pembridge each gained a place to fill second and third with 181 (from 14) and 175 (from 13) points respectively, with Les Smedley dropping from second to fourth now on 172 (from 14) points. John Adamson and Steve Hoult switch places with 166 and 162 points, Keith White has gains a place and moves to seventh with 157, Steve Talbot drops to eighth with 155 points. Nigel Brailsford has moved up to ninth with 147 points, Neil Stevenson has broken into the top 10 leader-board with 146. As only the top 15 results may count, the top four will shortly be in a position where they will drop points.
The next Championship Match is at Rycroft Fishery on Moat Lake on Sunday 6 November. With pegs at a premium due to high turnout, you need to book in early (with Dave Kent) to ensure a place.
