Members of LEVAS and Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) AC assembled on the banks of the Match Pool at Janson’s Fishery on Sunday in bright sunshine and a light wind on a beautiful summer’s day. As well as round eight of the 2016 Championship, the Mansfield cup was also at stake.
As soon as the match commenced it was evident that there would be high weights of fish by the end of the match, and so it transpired, with one weight of over 200-00, seven more exceeding 100-00, and a further 5 having over 90-00, giving an incredible average weight per angler of 85-08 of fish.
Dave Cotterill continued his scintillating form with another superb display of angling. Drawn on peg 17 towards the top end of the lake he took full advantage of a couple of empty pegs nearby to amass his “mega-weight” of 211-00 for a clear win. Starting on pellet he caught from the “off” by fishing short and his margins. After being pestered with small carp he switched to corn bait and his catch rate continued at breakneck pace to the end, in spite of his taking time away to fetch a further keep-nets from the other end of the lake (during which he did a lap of the lake to assess the opposition).
The other man in form, Steve Hoult, also put in a great performance to put 179-06 on the scales from peg 14 for second place. In contrast to the winner, Steve fished hard (banded) pellet throughout the match, and caught his fish about a metre from the bank throughout the day.
On the opposite bank, Keith White was heard admitting to around 45-00 of fish just before the match ended, but when the scales arrived he tipped 137-08 into the weigh-net for third place. The bulk of Keith’s fish fell to banded pellet fished short.
The minor placed were Les Smedley (peg 34) with 119-10 in fourth, John Adamson (peg 3) with 112-06 in fifth, and Brian Leafe (peg 15) with 107-14 taking sixth place.
Rob Pembridge has managed to retain his lead in the Championship with 112 points, but Les Smedley has gained points and is close behind on 109, with Dave Cotterill breathing down his neck on 108. The tension builds as the programme moves to Blake Hall (31 July) for the Annual Outing match.
