    REPORT
Sunday 10 July saw 27 members of Long Eaton Victoria Angling Club and Soldiers & Sailors (Sawley) Angling Club congregate on the bank of the Oak Pool at Beechwood Park (Elvaston) for round seven of the LEVAS Championship and also for the Richardson Cup.
The brisk gusting wind made it difficult to control tackle and get perfect presentation and the tight pegging also meant that anglers had to work hard for bites and to keep fish interested. The top three came from the North end of the lake, with other top weights decided by pockets of slightly larger carp that added those vital extra ounces.
Dave Cotterill (peg 2) fished an excellent match to win with nearly 30-00 to spare. Finding that his margin areas failed to produce, Dave concentrated on fishing with long pole to the island, and baiting with a banded hard pellet, he kept fish interested for the full five hours to put a magnificent 82-02 on the scales.
Opposite Dave on peg 29, guest angler Chris Buckingham fished a similar match to put 53-08 on the scales for second place, as did Paul Marriott (on peg 3 beside the winner) for his 47-12 and third place.
Steve Hoult (peg 14) caught mainly early and late for his 43-00 for fourth place, a late run of better quality fish doing the damage, with Soldiers’ Paul Skinner taking fifth place with 41-00 from peg 8 and Steve Talbot in sixth from peg 11) just ahead of the chasing pack with 34-06. All caught on long pole and banded pellet fished tight to the island.
Dave Cotterill’s win lifts him to third place in the Championship on 88 points (with two matches in hand), although Rob Pembridge retains the lead on 98 points, and Les Smedley in second place on 92. Brain Leafe (84) and Steve Talbot (81) complete the leading five anglers.
The next match is on 24 July on Jansons (Match Lake), another joint match involving LEVAS and “Soldiers”. Names to Dave Kent to book a place.
