2004 Total-Fishing.com/ACA Challenge, The Glebe, Leics (90 pegs)

MOSELLA’s Kieran Rich took this two-day event organised through the top match angling website www.total-fishing.com, which raised a fantastic £2200 for the ACA. However, for such a big weight event it was a very close run thing, Kieran winning his section by just one fish on each day.

The match was split into two halves, with seeded anglers in one section and non seeded anglers in the other to give the less experienced rods an equal chance of lifting the trophy. The system worked well too, with the top four places split equally between the two groups.

Kieran drew on the Foundation Lake at Mallory Park on Day One and with no bait limits in place reveled in the chance to really attack the venue. He balled it at the start with Manic Carp groundbait laced with plenty of caster to create a cloud to draw fish in, and then loosefed heavily over the top with caster and fished caster shallow on a very aggressive rig tied to 018mm line to a black Hydro elastic.

“Fish were on the bait straight away and every time they backed off I would ball it again and they would be back,” said Kieran, who weighed in 123-4-0 to finish less the 2lb clear of Derek Willan, who fished feeder, chopped worm and caster. “I would say I got through eight or nine pints of caster. The venue really suited me because I love to attack and I was able to do just that both with my feed and my rigs.”

Day Two saw Kieran on Glebe Pool Three (Uglies). This time he fished the fished feeder and went fish for fish with Giles Cochrane, his eventual 82-2-0 total once again being less than 2lb clear of Welshman Giles.

He need a perfect two section points too, because local rod Steve Slayter won his section both days as well as did Mick Davies.

Kieran was well clear on weight though with an excellent 205lb over the two days, although it was nip and tuck for runners up spot.

The final tally saw Steve just one fish clear on 140-13-0 to Mick’s 138-8-0. However, Mick had the satisfaction of winning the Total-Fishing Trophy which can only be won by members of www.total-fishingclub.com. .

Giles also had some consolation in winning the pairs event with Steve Broadbent, the two of them totaling just seven section points over the two days. They won cut glass trophies and two Suveran rods care of Pairs sponsors Pure Fishing.

“Many thanks go to fishery owner Roy Marlow for donating his brilliant fishery for two days at a time when it is normally closed in aid of such a good cause,” said match organiser Gareth Purnell.
