REPORT
Following an improvement in the weather, Long Eaton Victoria Angling Society’s Championship Match 17 on Marstons Pool (DERBY) was met with great anticipation and was resultantly well attended.
Unfortunately, following the cold winter, the bulk of the fish were towards the far end and 5 of the top 6 anglers came from that area.
Top weight, from peg 12, was taken by Dave Cotterill.  Dave had a carp first cast on the feeder, and over the next three hours steadily caught chub, bream and roach on chopped worm at 12m.  When bites dropped off, he switched to straight lead and corn in the final hour to take five carp in five casts to win the match with 39 lbs 10 oz.
Until that final hour the front runner was Len Barker on peg 20 (opposite the winner).  After a slow first 2 hours Len had a ‘golden 2 hours’ and caught a bream and several carp on bread and corn on straight bomb.  Unfortunately his swim died in the last hour and his 34 lb 6 oz was only enough for second place.
Third weight John Adamson (peg 13) spent a fruitless first 90 minutes on feeder before a switch to pole (11m) and pellet brought instant success.  He then caught small carp (8 oz to 5 lb) and odd skimmer bream until the final hour, which proved bite-less, and had to be content with 31 lb 14 oz.
Ivan Carrier (peg 17) was fourth with 29 lb 7 oz, mostly carp taken late in the match on meat presented on straight bomb, with the ‘silver fish experts’ Steve Wilcock (peg 26) and Malc Munn (peg 19) taking the next two spots with 16 lb 12 oz and 13 lb 14 oz respectively.
The final match (for the Last Bash Trophy) will be on the Robin Hood Pool at Little John Lakes on 13 March.
