All in all, superb festival with plenty of fish caught despite Arctic conditions.

Had the weather been warmer, 50lb per section of silver fish would have been the target.

Classic Qualifier – Match / Arena Lakes
Saturday, 14th November 2009
Weather conditions could only be described as appalling for the competitors who braved the elements in the latest Classic qualifier. With the match split between the Match and Arena Lakes, a number of methods had to be employed to combat gale force winds.

Second placed Matt Stockton banked 112lb 15oz from peg 58 on the Match Lake, the fish coming predominantly to pole fished pellet and corn at 4 and 10 metres.

Mick Varley (MAVER) claimed third spot on the day with an excellent 90lb 6oz from peg 15 on the Arena, using his favourite method feeder approach.

The top two on the day secured their places in May’s prestigious big money final.

Average weight per man per day over 5 days = 88.5lbs per man per day.

Tactics on the match lake in general were pellet fished shallow on the pole at 14.5m. Pole at 3 to 5m with pellet, paste, corn and meat, pellet waggler shallow and pole fished tight in the margins for large carp.

Speci lake tactics were pellet waggler shallow with 8mm banded pellet, paste at 4m, meat at 6m with odd fish to the method and feeder lines.

Arena lake was mainly tight in the margins with pellet, corn and meat.

Some fish were caught with worm and paste also played a part.

Casters fed heavily in the margins with single caster hook bait also accounted for large weights of carp.

Maver Classic Final 2009
Sunday, 3rd May 2009

108 anglers made it through to the prestigious Maver Classic two day final on all three lakes of the Larford Lakes complex.

DAY ONE
Day one was an open draw with each finalist having to fish both the Specimen and the Match/Arena lakes over the two day final. Massive weights were recorded with the top weight coming from the Arena on day one.

First on day one was Chris Cameron (Mosella) who drew Arena peg 21 landing a staggering 83.220kg (184lbs). Chris fished at just 5m with soft hook pellet to land fish to 15lbs for a perfect score of 1 point and winner overall from the lake.

Second place on day one from the Match and Arena lake was Simon Willsmore (Daiwa Dorking/Milo) who drew Arena peg 32, landing fish to 15lbs for a total weight of 72.940kg (160lbs) and another perfect 1 point section score.

Third placed Des Shipp (Preston) drew Match lake peg 45 to land 65.120kg (143lbs) on pole and pellet. Des took a number of F1 carp shallow then caught bigger carp late in the match down the edge to secure a perfect 1 point section win.

Over on the Specimen lake, loads of big carp were being hooked with a number of anglers also losing out to the Larford specimens. Both pellet waggler and close pole tactics scored well on the day.

First position overall went to Roger Young (Maggots End) who landed some superb carp to 18lbs on the pellet waggler from burr bank peg 14. Roger went on to land 50.500kg (111lbs) of monster carp to secure his perfect section score.

Second placed Dean Cherrington (Kamasan Starlets) drew peg 23 to land 43.980kg on pole and meat, and a section points score of 2.

Third placed Neil Carless drew a couple of pegs away from Cherrington and was just 820g light from securing the second spot. Neil again landed specimen carp to 15lbs for a total weight of 43.160kg (97lbs) to win his section.

Overall Day One
Match/Arena Lake
1st Chris Cameron (Mosella) 83.220kg 1pt
2nd Simon Willsmore (Daiwa Dorking/Milo) 72.940kg 1 pt
3rd Des Shipp (Preston) 65.120kg 1pt
4th Ian Giddins (Maver) 64.640kg 1pt

Specimen Lake

3rd Neil Carless 43.160kg 1pt
4th Richie Hull (Garbolino) 33.340kg 1pt

DAY TWO
A much colder day with strong winds meant all the lakes fished a little harder, but still loads of 100lb bags were recorded.

Winner on the Match and Arena was Michael Sanders (Daiwa Dorking) who drew Arena peg 16 landing some real lumps to 15lbs on the method feeder. Michael weighed in a superb 65.840kg (145lbs) to secure a lake win and a perfect section score.

Second placed Steve Openshaw (Liverpool) needed a couple more fish to have won the lake weighing 60.680kg (134lbs). Steve caught close in on pole and meat landing fish to double figures from Match lake peg 20. Clearly Steve didn’t know what was happening on the Arena and was unlucky not to have won the lake, he did enough however to secure a perfect section score.

Third placed Pemb Wrighting (Maver) fished a near perfect match landing F1 carp shallow to pellet. Pemb also caught a few lumps down the side late in the match to weigh 57.540kg (127lbs) to finish second in his section.

Fourth placed Joe Lowe (Maver) drew peg 60 on the Match lake to weigh 55.320kg of F1 carp short on pellet with a few big fish down the side late in the match to secure a perfect points score in his section to go along with his second place from day one.

A brilliant lake winning performance from Maver Midlands man Ray Lamb over on Specimen peg 13 saw him land some monstrous carp to 18lbs on meat fished at just 5 metres. Rays overall winning weight was 61.020kg (135lbs) and a perfect section score.

Second place went to Ben Leach (Maver) who secured a perfect section score with 43.940kg (96lbs) from peg 14. Ben caught big carp at just 5 metres on pole and meat, but fell just short of the lake winner from the next peg.

Third placed Des Shipp (Preston) drew Specimen peg 10 to land an impressive 35.800kg (79lbs) of carp to pole fished short with pellet and meat. Des however, dropped a vital point, finishing second in his section and with a total of 3 points overall.

Fourth placed Jason Benning picked up 2 section points from peg 17 weighing in 32.260kg (71lbs) of big carp on pole and meat.

OVERALL
Plugging away quietly to record the only perfect score of 2 section wins and title of Maver Classic Winner 2009 went to the ever reliable Tommy Hiller (Daiwa Dorking). Tommy fished the perfect final, drawing peg 72 on the Match lake on day one, recording a weight of 50.680kg (112lbs) fishing pole and pellet to land carp to 5lbs.

Day two saw Tommy draw peg 71 on the Specimen Chalet bank, fishing to perfection to land 32.180kg (71lbs) of carp and bream to short pole tactics and pellet waggler. A brilliant display of angling over the two days, well done to Tommy, the trophy and title couldn’t have gone to a nicer guy.

Tommy collected £3160 and a Maver Competition 481 worth £2000.

An extremely tight finish to the final saw an incredible six anglers record an overall score of 3 section points meaning the final four main frame placings would be decided by weight. Thanks to his lake winning performance on day one, second place overall went to Chris Cameron (Mosella) who recorded a total weight of 102.540kg. Chris picked up £2200 plus a Maver Invincible pole worth £499.99.

Third place went to Des Shipp (Preston) who weighed a total of 100.920kg to narrowly miss out on second spot. Des collected £1160 plus a Maver Margin pole worth £199.99.

Fourth place with an overall weight of 97.620kg was Roger Young (Maggots End), who was incredibly unlucky not to win the Classic overall, missing out on a second section win on day two by just 460g. Roger picked up total winnings of £900.

Fifth place was local angler Rob Cooksey (Maver Midlands) with a total overall weight of 76.100kg collecting £580.

Total prize fund for the event was £15,500

Classic Qualifier – Match Lake
Saturday, 18th April 2009
A bright but breezy day greeted the 33 strong field. With the resident carp recently following the wind, the final result was surprising, as first and second came from the opposite end of the lake to where the wind was blowing.

Peg 6 directly in front of the café on the grass bank, produced 146lbs 15oz of carp for pellet expert, Chris Cameron (Mosella SW). Chris caught at 7m and in the edge on pole and pellet.

Ian Giddins (Maver) was pegged almost directly opposite on peg 74 and employed similar tactics to Chris for 132lb 6oz and second in the frame.

Another familiar name, Carl Jones (Maver) eventually made the most of fancied peg 56 on the Burr Bank, including carp to 12lbs in his total weight of 116lbs 13oz. Again, pole and pellet on the deck at 8m and down the edge late on did the damage.

Peg 12 on the grass bank produced 110lbs for Maver Midlands Rob Cooksey who fished pellet on the deck at 14.5m and 5m to take the final main frame placing.

With nearly 89lbs being needed for a section win, the prolific Match Lake again produced the goods!

Classic Qualifier – Specimen Lake
Monday, 13th April 2009
With the wind strength increasing significantly and a change in direction from the day before, weights were more evenly spread around the Specimen Lake.

Ben Leach (Maver) opted for a predominantly pole approach on peg 6, which resulted in fish being taken from 13m, 6m and an edge line. With a number of 15lb plus fish successfully landed on his Maver Elite 77 pole, Ben put 104lb 4oz on the scales, which secured victory on the day.

On the very next peg (8 on the day) Roger Young (Maggots End) adopted a pellet waggler approach which saw him secure second with 96lb 8oz.

Fresh from his qualification the previous day, Will Raison (Daiwa) combined the approaches of 1st and 2nd place to weigh and impressive 86lb 9oz from peg 22 on the Burr Bank, enough for third place.

Classic Qualifier – Specimen Lake

With the entry list resembling a whose who of match fishing, the draw was always going to be of the utmost importance.

To say Ray Lamb was not pleased with his draw would be an understatement, however, five hours and 122lb 13oz later, his opinion had changed somewhat!

Ray (Maver Midlands) produced a superb display of pellet waggler fishing at 35metres to claim top-spot.

Three pegs away on 47, Matt Haines (Marks Tackle) fished similar tactics for 98lb 11oz, enough for second on the day.

Next peg on the day (45) produced third place for Rich Hoskins (Daiwa Gordon), again fishing pellet waggler.

Maver/Angling Times Pairs Qualifier – Saturday 10th May

Red hot conditions and fish in full spawning mode presented difficult conditions for the sell out 50 pairs at Larford Lakes on Saturday. All lakes were pegged with two separate matches being the fairest way to split the favoured Match lake from the Speci.

The ‘Match lake’ was won by Paul Holland (GOT Baits) from peg 41 on the Arena, with a new lake record of 106.740 kilos. (235lbs) Paul fished short and shallow with pellet landing carp to 15lbs.

Second placed Lee Edwards (Preston) also drew the Arena, landing 76.880kg (170lbs) from peg 38. He also fished short and shallow on pellet.

Third placed Paul Oglesbee (Boston) made the most of peg 19 on the Arena to land 70.160kg (155lbs)

Fourth placed Simon Fry (Garbolino) fished a superb match on the Match lake catching 66.560kh of F1 carp and bigger commons shallow at 13m. Simon’s 146lbs section win putting both him and Klaus Fix through to the final.

The Specimen lake was alive with spawning fish making big catches very difficult.

Winner on the day was Mick Evans who landed a superb 89.300kg (196lbs) from peg 82. Mick fished tight down the side to land carp to 18lbs on worm.

Second placed M Flannagan (Chester Tackle Locker) drew peg 4 on the burr bank to land 38.560kg (85lbs) of mainly bream plus a few specimen carp, alternating between the big splasher waggler shallow and the long pole.

Third placed Paul Hubbard (Maver) drew peg 66, landing a couple of big carp on the method then reverting to long pole shallow and down the side to end up with 32.240kg (71lbs)

Qualifying Pairs for the Final

1st Paul Holland and Paul Hillier 3 points combined weight 119.740kg

2nd Klaus Fix and Simon Fry 3 points combined weight 88.700kg

MAVER CLASSIC FINAL 2008

107 anglers competed in the 2008 Maver Classic final, held at the prolific Larford lakes on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May.

Changeable weather and atmospheric conditions made the fishing difficult (by normal Larford standards) with many fish preparing to spawn. This did not, however, stop some monstrous weights being recorded over the two day event. A total weight of 11,425lbs was recorded, which equates to over 106lbs per man. With a line-up that read like a ‘who’s who’ of UK match fishing, the final result was always going to be close, as was born out with three anglers recording perfect two point scores.

Sunday started with heavy rain as the anglers made their draw and began the match. The sport on both the Match and Arena lakes was prolific and the average weight on the Arena was over 130lbs per man. Maver Barnsley Blacks star Andy Oldham recording the top weight with a massive 195lbs 6oz, just short of the lake record. On the match lake Pemb Wrighting put 191lbs 7oz on the scales from peg 40 opposite the island to win his section. Both men catching shallow on the pole consistently throughout the day.

Over on the Specimen lake it was Steve Ringer leading the way. Drawn on end peg 4 on the Burr bank, Steve utilised his space to catch in the margins, recording 121lbs 3oz to comfortably win his section and the lake. Will Raison, drawn on fancied peg 80, fished the splasher waggler and groundbait to put 99lbs 12oz onto the scales for a section win.

Monday’s weather was much better, but the flat calm conditions posed their own problems. With Will Raison drawn on peg 40 of the Match lake, and fellow England star Des Shipp drawn on peg 20 of the same lake, they quickly became the favourites to win the event.

With the difficult conditions it was hard to gauge who was actually going to win, as both Des and Will appeared to be struggling in their sections. Over on the Speci lake day one section winners Pemb Wrighting and Darren Cox had been drawn in the same section, and it was Darren who was leading for the majority of the match, until the last hour and a half where Pemb caught 8 carp down the edge to take the section and ultimately the whole event with a superb 131lbs 11oz giving him a perfect 2 point score and a massive 323lbs 2oz overall weight.

In very tight fought sections on the Match lake Will Raison narrowly beat Mark Eaves on the next peg by less than 4lbs to take B section with 116lbs 15oz giving him another perfect 2 point score and an overall weight of 216lbs 8oz, putting him second in the final standings.

In A section Richie Hull put in a late charge, catching a better stamp of fish in the margins on meat, but it was Des Shipp who took the section with 107lbs 12oz, giving him a perfect 2 point score, and an overall weight of 187lbs 11oz putting him in third position overall.

Three anglers were also tied on 3 points meaning the remaining two main frame positions would also be decided on weight.

Fourth place went to Darren Cox, whose combined weight of 198lbs 13oz was enough to put Jamie Masson into fifth place with a combined weight of 187lbs 13oz. Meaning it was Steve Ringer who narrowly missed out on the main prize money with a total weight of 182lbs 14oz.
