Maver boss Phil Briscoe tells me his stretch of the river at Stourport has been fishing really well and doesn’t expect any let up in sport. Bronze maggot on the float for chub and roach, along with a blockend feeder filled with Dynamite Baits Swimstim green pellets and a few caster and maggots, for barbel and chub, coupled with meat or red maggots on the hook, are the methods. The Meadow Field (Chalet bank) down to the weir stretch contains a whole host of top swims to tackle. The Manor Farm Leisure reach, just outside Evesham (tel: 01386 870039), is fancied to produce some good chub bags from peg 7 down to peg 50, as these fish to 4lb will be on the move upstream towards their spawning grounds. Waggler and plenty of bronze maggots is the order of the day, but feed some hemp, as you could easily pick up the odd barbel. DHP Match Fishing editor is back on the winning trail on his beloved River Severn so we’d better listen up! Ideally anglers will want to see the river dropping to get the best fishing at the end of the season, but should we see high water, then Dave points us towards the confluence of the River Salwarpe, a Severn tributary, and the main river, opposite the BAA stretch at Grimley. The pegs immediately back from the main river are superb in these conditions, with pole and maggot sorting out the roach and chub ‘in hiding’. Pike anglers could do worse than look at these pegs as it is a racing certainty that ‘old Esox’ will be doing more than just sheltering from the main current. ‘Harry’ says that you can’t get away from Stourport when the Severn is in fine trim, as it is solid with roach, with stick float or waggler the name of the game. Plenty of white maggots covered in tumeric is what the maestro uses and Dave gets his bait from Mark’s Tackle in Raven street, Stourport (tel: 01299 871735). A great deal of bank work has been carried out at Shrewsbury and this stretch is well worth a look during good river levels. Ring Keith Robson at Sundorne Fishing Tackle on 01743 361804 for on-the-spot info. Finally, when the Severn is low, then head for Worcester at Beauchamp Court by the racecourse and get spraying those maggots and fish the float … what else Harry asks? Brian Bennett has asked me to remind ‘Harry’ that he has been to the Severn 8 times this season and picked-up 8 times!
