Evesham’s resident barbel were in a very obliging mood for this the last of the normal Evesham Championship qualifying matches of the season. A total of four of the whiskery critters were hooked and landing, the best belonging to the eventual match winner, Tony Bench.

Drawn on peg two on the town water, Tony really struggled for the early part of the match, managing just a few small fish on feeder and waggler tactics. With an hour of the match remaining, he decided to go for broke, casting a small feeder loaded with with hemp and halibut pellets three quarters of the way across the river, and fishing an 8mm halibut pellet on the hook.

With forty minutes to go, Tony’s rod arched over, and he was into a good fish. After a brief and lethargic fight, he had the beast in the net. On its own, it went 10-13-0, and with the help of his smaller fish, it took his total weight to 13-0-0.

In second place from the opposite end of the match length, was ever consistent Preston rod, Michael Buchwalder. Michael also set his stall out for big fish on feeder, but none were forthcoming, so after two hours he dropped on a line fed with bloodworm and hemp for small fish. He caught roach steadily on the two baits for the remainder of the session, to finish with 8-12-0.

A barbel also helped Paul Priday to third spot from peg 26. The Tubertini Ludlow rod managed a good whisker on maggot feeder, and some smaller fish on the same tactic for an 8-3-0 total.
