Notable fish…….: The 1st run I had was off a catfish but unhooked its self or dropped the bait. The 2nd run was off a very big carp easily 20lbs but lost it. The 3rd run was off another catfish but also lost that. I changed the hook size to a size 8 and had a 17lb 5oz common! then plenty of 7lb mirrors and 10lb commons throughout the day.
Bait and tactics…: I got a kg of dynamite baits swimstim groundbait, got a 900g tin of hempseed, big tin of cheap sweetcorn, bag of 10mm halibut pellets and some Koi micro green pellets and mixed it all up into a damp mixed, enough to make balls with. Also I added some Richworth K-G-1 boilies to the mix and fed next to some lillies. This produced well, I could reccomend that mix to anyone. You will need a good amount as I had to put in quite alot to keep the carp feeding!. But start off with small amounts as it may spook the carp.
Information……..: Im local, from New Quay and have fished the fishery a number of times and have never been let down with the quality of the fish, Always fish with the baits you think wont work as they tend to do so! I highly reccomend the Richworth handy pack boilies especially the K-G-1 and Pinapple Hawaian!

The much anticipated 2008 Wales Carp Masters is off and running at last with Heat 1 taking place at Celtic Lakes Resort over the weekend of 30th May – 1st June.

Seven pairs of carp anglers took part in Heat 1 of the competition, now in its second year. The first three teams were:

Position Team Peg Weight

1 James Willatts & Lee Botchett 1 350lb

2 Nigel Davies & Robbie Davies 6 172lb

3 Bob Randerson & Blondie Jones 9 143lb

Amazingly enough, James Willatts & Lee Botchett also won the heat one qualifying event at Celtic Lakes last year with a weight of 324lb 8oz. Congratulations to James and Lee who will be joined in the grand final by runners up Nigel Davies and Robbie Davies.

James had this to say after clinching his team’s place in the final:

“Myself and Lee Botchett won the first Heat with 350lb. Looking through the log I think it was a total of 42 fish. We fished the first Heat last year at Celtic Lakes and are delighted to have qualified for the final again. It was an exhausting weekend but we are very pleased that the effort paid off. Sorry no photos of fish, didn’t seem to have time to take any ;-). Looking forward to the final and I hope by then Lee can make a decent cup of tea… ;-)”

John Carney, who heads the Wales Carp Masters team was delighted with the first heat of this years event:

“We are all feeling a little knackered right now but we are over the moon at the way the first heat of the Wales Carp Masters has gone. I would like to thank the whole WCM team for their hard work and effort, not only during the heat but also in the planning and organising of the event. I would also like to thank the competitors for the exemplary way they conducted themselves during the weekend and finally congratulations to the winning two pairs who we look forward to seeing back here at Celtic Lakes in the final in August”.

There are still places available in the remaining five heats. Heats three and four at Celtic Lakes were both won last year with weights topping 500lbs and 600lbs respectively.
