Southsea boating lake, there will be dozens of kids down there who will have buckets of crabs they’ll flog you, might be a bit dodgy to talk to them tho, but you could get your own, one rasher a mtr of string and a bucket, couple of dozen in half an hour.
Posted on 14.06.07 at 21:22shonzy Crabs have been hard to come by, it goes like that…. anything from 500-4500 a week to nothing!! Hopefully they should start peeling soon ready fot the 30th
Tried a new spot for hardbacks, 60 in 30 mins, happy dayz
Sterius got a carfull at the mo but one of them should be able to drive, we’ll sort summit out nearer the time
Posted on 14.06.07 at 22:45sterius
shonzy, let me know yeah. Don’t wanna miss the 30th.
BTW what’s the best way to keep crabs alive, and for how long? Gonna go canoe lake tomorrow for awhile to stock up on bait for use at the submarine blocks next week.
Posted on 14.06.07 at 23:32H.A.
Try the Sea Life Centre outdoor pool …..
Posted on 15.06.07 at 10:15Paully Haven’t those crabs you picked up in Guernsey peeled yet!
Posted on 15.06.07 at 11:53iowa

Posted on 15.06.07 at 15:45maggit Sorted now !
Got some glow lites for me rod ends, got a couple of dalek head torches and a lantern so bring it on !
ps, the sister in law and her fella may want to come to selsey too, would this be ok ?

Posted on 15.06.07 at 18:21H.A.
There’ll be enough weed there without bringing their own ‘gear’!
Posted on 15.06.07 at 22:02Greenman
Will we be doing West or East beach this year?
Any comp’s or other meets on the same day?
Posted on 16.06.07 at 01:38Greenman

ALL, EVERYONE and ANYONE welcome, just turn up.
You can visit, join in and/or fish, no problems, open to all and everyone.
I will have -
23/06/2007 at 3:03 pm #60592
TF_GreenmanWell now that we are back up and running, we shall start again.
Lots of talk, but is West Sands confirmed???
I hope to be on site before 14.00, if dry will set up kitchen.
Should have everything you might require, just bring your own grub and help yourselves.
But it’s only a small two ring and grill camping stove for pots and pans etc.
Great for boiling kettle, frying onions, eggs etc, but if windy can take some time, especially at busy times.
Is anyone going to muck in with a charcoal of Gas BBQ? to help with the main cooking period.
Depending on the weather and bathers, will fish day as much as possible, could be Bream, small hooks, float or at distance.
May be Mackie, feathers, lures of float.
May even find some Dogs, Smutt and others.
High Tide about midnight, depending on weather and the fish will stay as long as possible, will keep kitchen open if required, will try and keep kettle on the boil.I will have many rigs and leads available if you get stuck.
On site within stagger distance.
Carpark on beach, almost fish out the back of vehicle.
Bar, Toilets, shop, amusements, cafe, take away etc. It’s up to you where you fish, but as it’s a meet, it would be great if we all stuck together.
When you arrive, claim a ‘stake’ and post your spot on the beach.
Not the done thing or offical, but it may help keep your spot on the beach till you get set up.
Marker pen available to put your name on stake.
When you have got set up, please move stake along to next spot, so that it’s available for someone else in our group.Warning;
I had some strong emails in the past, don’t want them again.
We have previously been blamed, as an easy target, for problems on the beach by Bunn Leisure and holiday makers.
These claims have been completely unfounded and denied.
If it’s been a hot day the beach may be a mess from the bathers rubbish, don’t let us get the the blame again.
Please clean up and don’t leave any rubbich or cause conflict.
Bin are situated in the car park, I will also have a bin at the kitchen. My mobile; 07932140070.
You can text, but don’t expect a reply!Any other questions or details required?

steriusIs anyone from the Portsmouth area going? Shonzy, any news abt the carpool yet?
I’d volunteer two disposable charcoal bbq sets.
-
23/06/2007 at 9:09 pm #60595
TF_Greenmanmaggit, cider I don’t think so, bad times many years ago, vodka may be!
Just read the thread again, think it means what I said!
Small stove with all the gear required, help yourselves.
But if windy and 20 waiting to cook their food, can take some time, previous years someone else has also supplied BBQ as extra cooking at the busy time, that’s it.
Ada, I will get the special fried onions ready. -
23/06/2007 at 9:16 pm #60596
TF_GreenmanSo that we can keep in contact on the day, anyone going either post on here for all or email me [click on red Greenman] your mobile number.
Everyone is welcome, just turn up and get involved, even just for a drink in the bar or the BBQ, or to watch.
Thinking of starting beach fishing, come along and muck in, spare rods and gear will be available, that’s it, it’s a meet.. -
27/06/2007 at 12:30 am #60597
TF_GreenmanOpp’s, found this on page 2.
-
27/06/2007 at 1:16 am #60598

27/06/2007 at 8:11 am #60599
AnonymousNot looking good for the crabs chaps. We haven’t had any in for 4 weeks.
Get collecting those hardbacks!!
-
27/06/2007 at 6:28 pm #60600
maggitsomebody tell me how i get a crab on a hook
-
27/06/2007 at 7:58 pm #60601
maggito my god, what size hook was that ?
what hooklength bs ?
what weight would you need to cast that and how far would you need to cast it ?
-
27/06/2007 at 8:46 pm #60602
JackyboyProbably an 8/0 octopus hook! LOL
You’ll need 30-40lb snoods for hounds.
The weight will depend on the tide run, Try at distance and reduce you distance if you ain’t catching. I caught at less than 20yds between groynes!
As pointed out by someone else, you can break the legs of the crab and hook it by th socket. Here for gilthead bream, I use whole hardback which I remove the lungs (which is a piece of shell remove at the back of the crab) and hook the centre of the crab with a strong short shank hook.
-
27/06/2007 at 8:50 pm #60603
maggit8/0 are you serious ?
got some 20lb amnesia, and 30lb stuff !
8/0 ? where the kin el do i get a hook that big ?
-
27/06/2007 at 9:28 pm #60604
JackyboyNo, don’t use an 8/0…
A 2/0-4/0 will do. 30lb snood will be fine.
Here is a pic I found when using big green grab as bait.
-
27/06/2007 at 9:31 pm #60605
JackyboyForgot to say, match the hook sizee with the bait size you are using.
-
27/06/2007 at 9:47 pm #60606
TF_GreenmanMaggit, I will have some spare rigs if required, 2/0 to 4/0 will do.
As Jackyboy says, match hook size to bait size and also targeted fish, nice details JB [you do have far too much time]
Perhaps Ada is getting us some monster crabs for the monster sharks, but regardless of the size of Ada’s big crabs they can be cut in half to suit size of hook.
make sure you have some bait elastic [for all baits] to aid casting and help stop the crabs for a while.
Short of crab bait, use fish bait on multi hooks of trebles and catch some spiders – free bait!
H.A. nice sketch, grandson said he could do better! -
27/06/2007 at 10:13 pm #60607

No good arranging a meet for two when twenty turn up, that’s it. -
28/06/2007 at 12:55 pm #60609
steriusWell, it’s Thursday and I still haven’t sorted transport. Anyone going from the Pompey area? Shonzy, anything sorted yet? As said before will pay for petrol (10 quid oughta sort it no? don’t mind paying more anyways).
I’m going crabbing at canoe lake tomorrow evening for some hardbacks. Gotta go pick me up some 30lb amnesia as well as 4/0 uptides too. Anyone working/too busy to pop down to tackle shop? I could pick up a few things on my way.
-
28/06/2007 at 4:08 pm #60610
steriusThanks Paul! Oh btw I think I owe you a tenner for the powercast (old is gold isn’t it).
-
29/06/2007 at 1:01 pm #60611
iowaUsually if windy or inclement East beach is go – but tommorow is ‘Sea Selsey’ Fun fair , stalls et al, displays by local fisherman(commercial hoovermen) and an angling comp on East beach.
So we is stuck with West Sands unless sea Selsey is rained off like last year. -
29/06/2007 at 8:53 pm #60612
TF_GreenmanChicken, what’s wrong with getting a bit wet?
Mind you the weather has never been correct!!Anyone got any crabs for me yet?
Car loaded and ready to load the grub etc. in the morning.
Eye’s still sore from doing the onions. -
29/06/2007 at 9:54 pm #60613

TF_GreenmanWET!!
-
01/07/2007 at 6:36 pm #60617
iowaI think you will find that is ‘Fursty Ferret’ Pizza. Despite the inclement weather very pleasant day/Evening, food as supplied by Greenman & Pizza excellent, do not often hear the words ‘ Go on have another steak;. Sorry I had to ‘run’ got home in one piece clothing intact.
There was mystery fisherman who booked a bit of the beach with a rod rest then left? -
01/07/2007 at 7:03 pm #60618
steriusI could stand the rain, but not the wind. Plus, not being able to cast that far, weed would sweep my line back to me almost immediately after casting which is really frustrating.
-
01/07/2007 at 8:54 pm #60619
TF_GreenmanJune 30th GREAT Summer!
-
01/07/2007 at 9:10 pm #60620
TF_Greenman12 hours, apart from 2.5 hrs watching F1 and eating and 1 hour mowing lawn, I’ve now managed to clean and pack away the kichen and fishing gear, what a mess, still some wet clothing hanging in workshop.
All now clean and sorted for next time.
I think it would of helped if I had parked on the bank, rather than the flooded muddy car park.
Oh, also spent some time redesigning a new canopy, seeing that you all liked it so much, thought i may need something a bit better and bigger?
Any complaints? refer to Ada’s bangers!!!!.Great to meet you all again, regardless of the problems and those missing!, but we did see a smutt.
It’s a great venue [and we had the beach to ourselves for a change] but in the end the weather and poor turn out beat us, I will be eating BBQ stuff all week!! -
02/07/2007 at 12:14 pm #60621
AnonymousWind, rain, not many fish…. the perfect TSF meet.
Nice beer,Great food, ok company 😉 nice to meet up as always, great laugh
-
02/07/2007 at 8:07 pm #60622
AnonymousI think we should do another meet?? 28th July look’s good
Maybe more people will turn up….and even stay!!!!!
-
02/07/2007 at 10:42 pm #60623
TF_GreenmanOK Arron, we are up for it, go for it, do new post [remember key words]
check on comp matches on same tide.
Comfirm the beach, meet time and tide times.
If it’s fixed meet, do the ground work and set it up, venue and times etc, no change, thats it. Simple.
Or do it as a meet and decide on the day to venue, would not like this, especially if extra gear{BBQ} involed.Book me in for the 28th.
