Nigel Ive seen this kind of thing happen before in my Cheffing days i think you will find its dead and the reaction is nerves, The people who have put this on are disturbed it is a shocking image.

Different cultures do different things. They probably think that us putting the fish back is shocking etc. It is not as if it was done over here???

what about the moon bear link next to it ,it goes on and worse but if only these animals could talk ? are us anglers much different ?

Given the choice of captivity or death, I’d choose death.

I’ve seen this on one of the Korean cooking channels. Unfortunately is a cultral thing as is raw fish.

If you walk down to the beach you will see them with lightweight beach rods, not to disimmilar to a long quiver tip rod. standard set up is a massive treble hook with a bomb centrally located underneath. they simply cast it as far as they can and whip it through the fish snagging anything they can. As far as I’m aware it’s the same on lakes for carp and bass.

Although it is barbaric to us as are the fish markets where you will see fish laid on their side in an inch of water or so, to these people it is a way of life and fish is their main staple diet.

I will never fish over for this reason, however if you live over here you simply have to ignore it and accept it.

I have been to a ‘banquet’ in Hong Kong and had carp served like this. It is a cultural thing and whilst it may well upset our sensitivities there are plenty of people out there who think fishing should be banned.

Live and let live, when in Rome, etc etc.

We are far too quick to condemn other peoples way of life. Eventually I am sure his practice will cease to exist but understanding and education is the way forward not outrage.

By the way, the banquet also included, jellyfish, shore crabs that are eaten whole, chewed until all the good bits are gone and then the shells spat out! and numerous other delicacies. I and fellow travellers feel that some of this is often done to upset our western views and make us ‘lose face’ by refusing to eat. ‘Face’ being vitally important in Chinese culture.

now for a different point of view .

what does this clip of a live fish having its flesh ripped from its bones ,& / or as described its been partionally cooked first ~think .tell you about fish feeling pain ~think

does the fish show any phisical signs of distress ,well in the areas thats not cooked like its petral fins (do thay shake with nervious shock) does the fish shake its head in a perfetic attempt to free itself from what should be excruciating pain (to a creature who feels pain in a simular way too us) .

it is a cultral thing though ,at first it probably looked and felt wrong too them ,but its become acceptable over time ,its no different too people eating oysters or Cavour someone had too try it first and its widley acceptable a delicacy’s or the french eating snail & frogs legs its just the way it is.

Gross! Not that shocked though, my other half travels to East and Southeast Asia every year and comes back with horrendous stories of food he’s been presented by suppliers, as a local delicacy and the common thread is that they are all still alive or are killed in front of you!!

He had a lucky escape last time after a supplier explained the restaurant they were going to take him to had been closed down by local authorities after it had been caught serving body parts bought from the local morgue??!!

While I cannot argue their right to eat a fish in this manner, i do question WHY? I dont understand why they dont want to keep the suffering of their food to a minimum. If the carp was kept alive in a tank of water and killed just before cooking, it would be just as fresh. What is running through their mind not to feel some pity for the fish, or empathy, perhaps wondering how they would feel if laying on a table being eaten alive? It is humiliating to the animal and that is why it bothers me.

Its fu****g barbaric!! There is no excuse for not killing the fish humanly first. Its because they are uncivilised and have an awful long way to go before they reach our standards.

Nitro. The reason why is as you surmised to show that it is fresh. Eating fish that isn’t fresh is likely to cause problems in Asia and serving it that way proves that it is fresh! Taking it out of the tank, then killing it and taking it to the kitchen to be cooked doesn’t prove that it is fresh. You lose sight of it when it goes to the kitchen and it mat not be the same one that comes back out again.

By the way, the fish that people had with their chips tonight was almost certainly gutted whilst still alive. You don’t seriously think that each commercially caught cod is knocked on the head and stunned before it is gutted do you?

Most trawler caught fish are dead before they reach the surface due to massive pressure changes. Been there done that as my uncle had a trawler back in the good old days when we called our waters OUR OWN,

In the local North Sea, there are no great depths so most are alive. What about the huge numbers that are caught whilst long lining? In fact most of the ‘local’ fish is caught this way, certainly around my neck of the woods. Not here to argue the point, but I can assure you what happens to fish would never be allowed to happen to mammals.

South east Asian countries are generally notoriously cruel and have little empathy with animals. Some Japanese love their Carp but personally I have little time for them. So when a natural disaster comes along and we’re all actively encouraged to feel sorry I just say ‘Oh dear how sad never mind’ and let them get on with it,

Oyster get eaten alive and eels are often filleted alive but that is no excuse for sitting around a table and laughing at something that must be suffering. Thats just sick!!

You are right there Darren!

Here in Denmark, “our” way of fishing (putting the fish back) is often laughed at!

They simply do not understand it (except the 1000 or so that actually go coarse fishing…)

That is horrible!!It is exactly why I never like to say where I fish. I can’t believe he ate it alive…If he was going to be cruel and eat it…At least kill it quickly so it isn’t in pain. I regret watching that…Its spoilt a good day!

anyone eaten carp just wondering what they taste like, lets face it most of europe eat the fish,is it any more barbaric than maories eating a witchity grub live?
I did find it rather gruesome to watch, however is it any more barbaric than cutting eels alive into sections in a pie and mash shop, another thing I didn’t like to watch, every culture is different I dare say some johnny foreiners may not like what we do to eels

Believe it or not Fred it’s actually quite nice! Not the whitest of fish (looks nicotine stained TBH!) but it’s perfectly edible. Tried it a few years ago at Christmas as a good mate of mine is half Polish.

Havent watched it but …….If it made you sick to watch it then why did you feel the need to promote it by publishing the link, ???
Finding it by accident and then promoting it makes you just as bad as the ppl who do this and those who put it on the internet in the first place
