…and spare a thought for the people who had piled their fantasy football team with Arsenal players (and made Arshavin captain), anticipating a hat-full of goals against a beleagured Bolton side. Absolutely disgraceful, if you ask me.

How dare the BBC insult our intelligence by putting a pile of snow right in front of the camera, when the rest of the picture shows clear tarmac surrounding the ground?

Perhaps they cancelled because the SkyTV crew were having trouble getting there.

I don’t know how serious that comment was, Rob, but it was not a TV game. The League Cup semis (both postponed) were the scheduled TV games.

It possibly will be live on Sky when it is re-scheduled, though.

You would of thought they’d of walked to the ground from around the London area.

Maybe they all don’t come from London? The shock of it ay Arsenal supporters not coming from London.

Hi, I hope you all don’t mind me dragging this back up to the top, but I would like to offer my congratulations to Arsenal & Man United for allowing their fixtures to go ahead at the weekend when the vast majority of Premier League clubs cancelled their fixtures.

Where were all the knockers with their comments over the weekend?

I’m thinking that the Everton fans that travelled to Arsenal probably had to make a very similar journey to the Spurs fans that would have been travelling to Liverpool, so any idea why the Liverpool game was called off? ~think~ ~naughty

Why was the wolves game away at West Ham called off on Sunday?? The ground and the surrounding area where shown on Sky – There was nothing wrong what so ever with either the pitch or the surrounding area – baffling, completly baffling??/~think ~think

The Man Utd game was in Birmingham, where I don’t think they have had as much snow. If you look at where other games went ahead at the weekend (Leicester, Coventry, Derby) it would suggest that the Midlands fared rather better than elsewhere.

The Wolves game was supposed to be in London, where all of the games were postponed, except for the Arsenal fixture. I guess that had something to do with the grief that Arsenal got for cancelling the Bolton game…

Gary, Did you see the tele pics? Nothing wrong with it what so ever. Even the commentators were bemused by it.

Paddy, I did not see the TV pictures, unfortunately. It sounds to me like the game was a victim of our litigation culture, whereby the police request match postponements as soon as there is any hint of problems. They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Gary, don’t think I’m having a dig at you cos I’m not. I realise you’re not too popular on here, but I quite enjoy your provocative posts, well more so the reaction you get from some posters! LOL!

Anyway I digress. Clearly the transport system was working sufficiently to allow Everton fans to get to North London, so presumably it was working in the opposite direction,and Spurs fans could get to Liverpool? In this day and age of pitches being under hot lamps all week (I’ve seen it at the Emirates when their not played on) the pitch would have been playable?

We are always hearing the Man U nockers go on about the majority of their fans reside in the south, so I’m surprised that the many millions of Liverpool local fans couldn’t make the game.

Sorry Liverpool fans if it sounds like a personal dig from me, it’s not, just using you as an example.

Gary, I cannot help but reflect on catching the bus as a 10 year old, walking to the stadium with my grandad with snow coming over the top of my wellies. Snow all around the ground and snow inside the all standing areas.
A pitch covered in snow with only the white line markings removed and an orange ball.
Gates of approx 30 to 35 thousand with snow ball fights at half time.
I cannot remember 1 person falling, or the games being off??? so to see the those telly pics just looked daft.

Paddy, I can honestly say that I never had a single ‘snow day’ in my 17 years of school/ college/ university. The whole notion of cancelling anything and everything at the first sight of cold weather is a VERY modern phenomenon. Schools have been closed for weeks, while the supermarkets next door have been open and VERY busy – explain that!

I visited a local Sainsburys at approx 3pm on Saturday and every single milk cage was empty and virtually all the fruit & veg had been sold, it was heaving in there so I know what you’re saying guys.

Also I heard something on radio 5 yesterday that shocked me. It was an interview with someone involved in law, and they basically said do not clear the path outside your house of snow/ice because if someone slipped and injured themselves on the bit you cleared they could sue you. He advised to leave well alone. What is this world coming to? Going full circle here it may well explain why a lot of games were called off this weekend!

As far as my understanding of the legal argument goes, it comes down to something called a ‘duty of care’. If you clear the pavement outside your house so that it looks safe to walk on, you could be considered to owe a duty of care – to make sure that it is actually safe – to anyone that subsequently walks on it. If not, then it could be considered ‘reasonably forseeable’ that someone could slip and suffer injury.

Gary, I had already seen something very similar in another paper – I think the thing that it does not say is that they make some of these decisions to early, it’s not as though we have ever known weather forcasters to be wrong is it, heaven forbid!!
