can anyone give me any advice on carrmill dam, planning to have a crack at the matchs there as soon as it thaws but i hav’nt had much experience on there. I fished a match there in the summer drew peg 1 and had 22lb of bream and skimmers chuckin a groundbait feeder 25 turns out on the advice of a decent fella who was on his way to his peg.I am not sure where i should be looking to draw this time of year or how far out i need to be throwing it,i have noticed some of the lads there use a 2 hook rig,was wondering whether this is the norm or just a winter thing any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I think you would have been in Hollinhey Bay when you fished the match which is often an excellent areas to draw.

Double hooking is the norm on the dam. Once upon a time the regulars used to breed / fish Gozzers but I think it may well have changed now.

It is a long time since I fished the dam but Hollin Hey Bay or opposite on the Deep drop alwways seemed to be the best areas. Around the arches where I think it is somewhat shallower only very rarely produced the winner.

Tough circuit to compete on. Some top drawer tip anglers fish it.

thanks the peg i was on was the first one next to the arches(arches to my right) and was very shallow. Where is holinhey bay positioned from there then do you know?

You did superbly then IMO. Was it in the summer? Generally the arches only fishes so well in warm weather.

Hollin Hey Bay is if you walk across the arches and keep on going right as far as you can on that side you come to holling Hey Bay. At the height of summer right in the bay tended to bethe fliers and as it cooled down the skimmers would be found more just on the edge of the bay / out of it and sometimes they would move across to what I know as the Deep Drop which is where the banking opposite that side is very steep just before you walk around to the ‘sunshine pegs’ which are a wooden boardwalk area around the corner.

Some fantastic tip anglers on the Dam. I always remember Ged Rigby and Dennis Knight being super accurate.

Its not a venue i have fished much and its been quite a few years. I think the best pegs in the winter where normally the sunshine pegs. I think they are the high 80s to low 90s. Something like 88-93 where the better pegs on the corner. I think what you described as the deep drop. Think thats called the steep drop from memory. Red maggot or worm and a GB feeder.

The arches where great pegs in the spring and early summer when the bream where in the shallows to spawn.

yes it was about june, the fella who gave me the advice said you will either blank or bag up. like i said i was chucking it 25 turns of the reel but this time of year i would imagine a much longer chuck to be needed in them other pegs to find the fish. Anyone know how to connect that first hook closest to the feeder on a two hook set up maybe a 3 turn water knot????

Vicci I don’t think they go that far at any time of the year. More than 25 turns granted but the largest shoal of bream seem to follow set patterns and if they are there, you catch them. I actually enjoyed pole fishing as you could often get double figure weights, no winning weight but decent fishing. Very occasionally from memory decent bream might show but it was nearly always skimmers. The last season I fished it properly, sweetcorn became a bit of an in hook bait before then it had always been gozzers or worm/maggot. Have pellets not had a run there?

am told a couple of balls of micros on the pole line then fish 4 or 6mm over them can work and i have seen pellets on anglers trays when i have had a walk around.
