TF_yorkshireI had a look in pole fishing magazine today,
there was a article by a “preston innovations”
sponsered angler.
The article clearly stated that in the feature
he was using 4×14 preston inter 8 pole floats for his
open swims and a 4×10 for his edge swim, it went onto say he would of used a carpa gent if conditions where not perfect.
So we are led to belive inter 8 floats where used.
It then went onto to promote almost everything under the sun preston has to offer!!!
Yet on one of the pictures the angler was infact using what looks like a KC angling float???
What are we to belive……… -

TF_bignParticipantThe angler in question owns KC Angling so using a KC Carpa Gent would be no surprise, but it looks to me like a Preston Inter 8 anyway

garber steveParticipantall steve is saying is that because conditions are good he can get away with useing a carbon stem float (and his choice is PI INTER 8)And if it was abit rougher that a wire stem float would be better (HIS CHOICE KC CARPA GENT)he desighns the floats so nows that is good for rougher conditions to be because of the wire stem.Have been to monks afew times and have never seen it so calm so he is saying what he would normaly use. I have known steve since i was about 12 and now 30 and any one that knows him would know that he speaks his mind and has now need to lie, at the end of the day it aint the float that catchs its the angler and i think hes an alright one that.Hes always answerd my questions with what i beleive to be a sensible answer. As for the photos there all PI INTER 8S with two different bristles.

TF_drawbag1967If you believe sponsored anglers strictly stick to tackle made by there sponsors then you are being very naive. Unfortunately in this country our tackle shops seem to be swamped by one particular manufacturer who’s product though good are made by blind Chinamen.

It is 100% an Inter 8 and there was not a Gent in sight on the day so not sure why the hysterics or needless accusations. Might I suggest this link: Specsavers 🙂

18/01/2010 at 8:04 am #89420
TF_geepsterParticipantI think there’s a more general point John that some anglers go over the top in what they write in terms of promoting their sponsor’s gear, and it’s counter productive because it turns people off.
-
18/01/2010 at 8:16 am #89423
TF_endpegI disagree Gareth. There should be no sub-text. This thread is about what someone wrongly thinks they have seen.
-
18/01/2010 at 8:30 am #89424
TF_daverobertsThere may be a more general point gareth but not in a thread that is titled ‘Pole fishing magazine are we being mugged off’
Thought it was a great read myself and what needs to come through in the articles does so!
Certainly gave me something to do during in all this non fishing depression!

DaveHarrellParticipantSo, in answer to the original question:
pole fishing magazine are we being “mugged off”???
The answer is: No!Sigh….
-
18/01/2010 at 9:28 am #89427
TF_geepsterParticipantOkay I must admit that may have been miss interpreted – i haven’t read or seen the article and it’s by no means a pop at anyone or any editor or magazine.
Far from it, Jon’s doing a great job and I think he has answered the specific and deliberately contentiously worded point about whether or not this person was trying to pull the wool over someone’s eyes – clearly it’s a ‘no’, we are not being ‘mugged off’.
I’m trying to widen the issue – and my point is this: Promoting product is a fine line – I’m talking in any industry not just fishing. We want to know what the top anglers are using, but there can come a point when you just think ‘give it a rest’.
I can think of quite a few examples and it’s something all magazines need to be aware of.
It’s always a balance between keeping the advertisers, without which we have no magazines, happy; and making sure the reader is getting concise, honest and up to date information. And usually the balance is pretty good.
However, if an angler overdoes it, in my opinion it’s actually counter productive for his sponsor because it can go in one ear and out the other.
Sometimes it’s enough to know that the person drives a such and such car, he doesn’t need to go on about how good the features are… endorsement by association. Will Raison uses Daiwa gear and has been involved in its development, therefore it must be good, if you get the idea.
Anyway, apologies if my original post was not clear. No, we are not being mugged off.

18/01/2010 at 9:39 am #89428
tomscholeyI wrote the article in question, and can promise that I was not trying to mislead anyone, and simply told it as it was, as we do in all the features in Pole Fishing.
In my experience sponsored anglers due generally use their sponsors gear, and when they don’t use it they don’t mind saying what they use instead and why.

TF_geepsterParticipantThankyou for taking the time to come onto the site and clarify it Tom.

TF_stevieskinYorkshire, from what I have seen the inter range have a mottled black/white/grey finish to them. I should imagine that in differing light conditions they can actually appear to look slightly different.
Just accept what you are being told by the people who actually know, i.e. Jon and Tom, I cannot see what they could gain by telling lies over a matter this trivial matter. -

TF_NW Cut AnglerPersonally I think pole fishing has improved and is on an upward curve. I also think the issue of sponsored anglers and usage of tackle is very valid and I am not bothered if Grant throws his toys out of the pram.
I thought you went OTT Mr Harrell with the let’s chat with / interview the star anglers in the latest edition of Match Fishing. It is very hard to beat the Big Kev ones. The Angling Star actually did a very decent interview with an ex big name angler who had returned to the circuit after ywears away and won a National. They also had a very good bread punch article by Allan Barnes in the latest edition.

18/01/2010 at 7:16 pm #89557
garber steveParticipantFor some one who thinks the article in question is going on about preston this and preston that the word preston is only used 8 times over a 5 page article and 2 of them are in his profile, does any one have that feeling when you draw a peg and wish you had fished it different, or worded it in yorkshires case.Realy dont want to go on like moaner so i wont,To all behind the pole fishing and match fishing magazine the work you do is great so dont alter it on the basis of misstaken float identerty i love my mags and all ways keep and lookafter them so i can go back certain articles and look things up,i still have my first match fishing mag JUNE 1994 there good to look at to see how things have changed and who knows in another 16 years i could pick up this months and say (i remember that topic all that fuss over steves floats)just think how big preston could be then.just one last thing just because anglers have the name of there sponcer on there cloaths and tackle doesnt make them pushy sales men, i love garbolino but i do use other stuff any way hopefully by the time ive written this this thread will nearly be over and another one started, hopefully not amoany thread every one relax and love fishing all the best garber steve
