A ferrox trout is a beatiful fish, anything over 8-10lb is considered a very big one. In my opinion over wintered rainbows dont count! ~shh

You have lost me a bit there but the reason I ask, is that recently I was walking the dog around Burrator reservoir. As you do, I was trying to spot fish. Anyway right against the dam wall in the corner where the wind was blowing into it was a bloody huge great big fish swimming about. Probably picking of food items from the scum line etc. Like I said it was huge, but as the dam is very high from the waters surface I couldn’t tell what species it was. One things for sure Ill be taking a few floating pellets with me next time lol.

I thought you were referring to wild brown trout that have grown large by eating other fish. These predatorial ferox trout live in places like Loch Fyne. Rainbows and brownies which are tank reared can easily get over 20lb as they are fast growing.

My Grandad had a picture of a 17lb trout caught form a south yorks venue on pike tackle in the late 70’s. Trout were stocked in there but only 1lb maximum. Not sure if this was a wildy or a stocky that must it must of been in there a while & been a greedy thing !!

Yeah these are stocked, they are not natural, but they are very few and far between and the reservoir is so big they are almost like wild trout. The fish I spotted was probably some old dog that had managed to evade capture for donkeys.
