TF_RossnI don’t do winter fishing and I certainly don’t do ice breaking so I’ve no idea why I spent the day helping to net a frozen lake today, but I did.
I’ve got quite a few reasonable pictures including a double figure koi which I’ve never seen caught in a match and I’ll try to stick them somewhere so that you can see them tomorrow.
Anyhow, to all those doubting Thomas’s who said there were no fish in New Lake you’ll remember that we moved 147 (I think I had the figures wrong when I posted before, I was doing it from memory).
So today the water was a foot lower and there was a fair old lump of cat ice in the bay between pegs 7 and 10. First sweep of the net with Terry the Cod out by the aerator on one end of the net and Paul walking along the bank from peg 6 with the other end produced 399 carp estimated at about 3,000 lbs !!. It took an eternity to move all that lot and we had one more sweep of the net that brought 25 carp, a heap of roach and gudgeon and about 2 ton of ice and silt. We then gave up…frozen to death. We’d moved 337 carp averaging 7 – 8 lb to top lake, 75 3 pounders to Oak Tree and 13 big doubles into Christmas Tree Lake. Our figures show that we’ve moved 484 carp for an estimated weight of about 3,900 lb into Top Lake this week, let’s hope that the fishing will now be as good as it always used to be on that lake.
Incidentally, before we started netting they had a delivery of 400 lb of skimmers and crucians from a fish farm and no….it wasn’t that well known farm of death where so many KHV carrying F1’s were bought a few years back. The skimmers weighed between one and a half and two pound (we weighed 10 for 18 lbs) and the crucians were a few ounces each. They all went into Johns Lake.
Once New Lake has been de-silted it will be stocked with the small carp and barbel from the stock pond and a new batch of tiddlers will go into the stock pond for restocking in a couple of years time.

thecodThanks to the people down at Willinghurst today that helped us out at removing the carp from new lake.
Anyway to all the people that keep telling us to turn it into a car park because there are no fish in it, I would like to say that you were wrong.
Just maybe you might have to fish a little bit better to keep up with the carp instead of the carp throwing themselves onto your hook !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED. -

TF_DishyfishFirst off well done you all on Tuesday!! Ross, Terry, Jason ect ect. I only wish my job would give me the time off to be part of something like that. The work you put in that day! And the on going stocking will make this fishery proud again..
I never doubted for once that there were not fish in the new lake, because all the fish were moved there from the old “old lake” The lakes which suffered the most, were the top lake and Johns lake. I never got to fish Johns lake and now with the new stocking of Skimmers ect I cant wait to fish that lake. Bring back some of the old styles of fishing I use to do many years ago, What a great winter venue Willinghurst can be.
Great news for the top lake with all those fish going in.~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap Awesome
As you might guess from my posts! I love Willinghurst. Great people I have met, great stories been shared and all in such a wonderful environment.. I can only get out maybe two or three times a month!! I could go elsewhere, but why when I have a great fishery 45 mins drive away. I could try and get to grips with new places, and be pools fodder!! Or stick with a place through thick and thin, which as been kind to me and more importantly a place I enjoy to be at. Winning a few pound is not everything.. Just having a laugh with some of the characters you meet at Willinghurst is a enough.. Some places you go no one talks to you not even at the next peg!! Untill you totaly batter them!!! And then they stroll up wanting to know everything and what you had for breakfast, like they are your best mate. Long live Willinghurst the banter the craic and here’s to the great fishing to come ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap Terry “Cod” Mick Amy, Teabag Paul You are blessed with such a great fishery!! Long may it last. SEE YOU ALL SOON CAN WE HAVE A MATCH THE 28th AND THE 7th OF MARCH I HAVE A PASS LOL……….

TomWWithout wishing to get shot down as this just an observation from the couple of times iv been and from the posts I read on here every week. The close knit community sort of atmosphere that all the regualrs love could be everything thats wrong with the venue. Fair enough if it was one small lake with a group of regulars that love getting involved with the ins and outs of the fishery but to me, the fishery is far to big for that sort of image. Thats just my point of view as a total oustider and I dont mean to offend the willi “groupies” on here by it at all.

TF_MICK THE BOOKIETom……Now that is a very brave post mate,(Fair play to yer). But i have to say Willinghurst is very much loved by all,and i hasten to add,i am a “junior” at the venue compared to many long time users of the brilliant fishery.
As previously stated many times on this site,i thought the “New management” have done much to improve the fishery, and much progress has been achieved. However terrible unforseen fish kills decimated our”Home”.But we will all hope to be back fishing there soon. ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap -

TomWlol I was a bit worried when I pressed post. I just wanted to give an oustiders point of view to see if it was intentional, or even true? I heard about the fish kill. I just feel from what iv seen of the place it could be so much bigger than it is, I live a couple of hours away and wouldnt think twice about travelling down for regular 40 peggers.

TF_teabagTom, there’s no such thing as a close knit down here at Willi, anyone can fish the opens – once you have filled in the online CV and also received 4 invites from the regulars – your in. lol
May I ask why your only interested if 40 on the open matches regularly~think
to be honest with you that will be quite a feat at present, seeing that there are so many descent match venues in the surrounding area. -
14/02/2010 at 9:01 pm #94339
TF_PikeyTom – I run a 6 match league at Willinghurst from October onwards they are teams of five with 10 teams fishing. If you are interested I’m sure I can find you a team. It is anglers of club standard, so no Superstars……apart from Mick The Bookie obviously.

TF_teabagPikey, are you still going to run a charity match at Willi this year?????, only asking because I see you have one at the Glebe.

14/02/2010 at 9:39 pm #94349
TF_PikeyMark – Yes mate, I hope to have it at the end of September and dropped in to Willinghurst today to book it and some other matches.
Guess what ? ………………..there was nobody home !
-
14/02/2010 at 10:44 pm #94360
TomWIm not from the area so its alot of travelling for a smaller match which I could easily find closer to home. My point was everything was there for big opens and I really like the place from what ive seen, but like I said ive got matches like that within an hours travelling. Dont you think for such a big complex not enough goes on though?
-
15/02/2010 at 1:41 pm #94400
TF_teabagWillinghurst may be a big complex, but most of the lakes are relatively small and full with old wise carp, if you have too many pegged on a lake at once the carp will just shut up shop and not many will be caught, during summer months if you regularly spread bigger opens over to many lakes you end up getting to a point where you are losing a lot of money through day ticket money, during winter when the carp stop feeding the matches dwindle away.
Johns Lake was built to help over come this problem, but as you know things did not go quite to plan and has set things back for a while, a new canal lake has been built as well which in time will help on the match side, I can see big open matches being held at Willinghurst in the future, but not for a while yet.

TF_teabagDave, glad to hear your still running some down at Willi.
Bad timing on your part for coming down on Sunday, if you came on Saturday there were 3 there. lol. On sunday Paul was there on his own and will be for the next week while the others grab a holiday before the mad rush starts~hand
If you pop down again soon, give the Willi phone a ring and Paul will meet you down at the Cabin.

TF_teabagJust a couple of carp and some bits to hook out Brian, water level needs to be taken right down first, not easy to get them when they have 2 and a half foot of silt to hide in. lol
