garber steveParticipantthe lake in question is johns lake at willinghurst and it was stocked with what i heard to be 35000 3-4oz carp but also what i heard was that it was fished far to early and due to this 95% have died so it has been left to bloom again and stocked with skimmers and crusions along with the remaining small carp witch are now about 8-9-10oz and some odd large carp that made it through from top lake how long would you leave it for be for fishing it again dont get me wrong i was one of those who fished it but now im thinking lets let it settle and the lake will be awsome this topic is open to votes and thoughts on the matter remember theres another 8 lakes to fish

TF_Nigel.Young fish can’t take a battering, and putting them in nets is worse.
Silvers, are very delicate fish, i have some 1 inch skimmers here that are 9 months old, and are doing well, but must be treated with kid gloves.
I also have some 3 inch carp, that are the same age, and are doing very well, and are just getting big enough to call fish! (rather than fry)
As for fishing for them, i like them to be at least 18 months old, abot 6 inch, or 4oz.
I know some like them to be 8oz or even a pound before they get fished for.
But i feel if they are stocked into your existing stock then they are ok.If the whole pool is stocked with little fish, then you could sit there all bagging little fish to hand, but they wont survive being put in nets or being over fished.
Get some fertilizer in there, get some cow muck in, and get the water full of green algea and full of natual food for the small fish, and they will thrive.

TF_Nigel.I nearly commented on the Willinghurst little carp, i didnt know it was the same pool you were on about. It sounds like you have allready learned!
-
02/03/2010 at 9:26 pm #96785
TF_Nigel.I would move some fish around Steve if you want to fish that pool, mix the little fish in the other pools, and move some proper fish into that pool.
Then the little fish wont get targeted, and hammerered! -

garber steveParticipanti am glad i stared this topic even if just to no about mixed ages of fish and the cow muck thing mabe as brian(propertidal boy)said its good to talk and laerning how to treat fish that are new to a lake i no they use die on the lake any way once its beeen established and thriving itll be great fishing even if windy but lets sort the fish out first and then the wind barrier

TF_Jason Morgansteve , the lake in question did have a fish kill of khv on the small carp, and as a result a percentage of them didnt survive the lake its self remained open and a winter league of surrey was held on it , along with a practice match hosted by mr steve g ( god) and a mainly roach catch won it. the lake was indeed stocked recently with some skimmers , but they weigh nearly 1.5lb , in fact they where weighed on entry and 10 went 18lb . carp where the only fish affected by the virus and the silver stocks are of such size that fishing for them would do no harm at all, never the less as far as i am aware there are no plans to hold matches on the lake at present, i wish everyone would get the facts right and not turn comments on willinghurst in a witch hunt ! its quite remarkable the concern when most people have not been near the place for months.

TF_teabagJohns is being left free of match fishing till way into next winter, plenty of other places to go and fish for skimmers in the meantime.

TF_DishyfishSteve the lake in question is ticking along nicely!! Plenty of fresh water going in. No one fishing there, just letting it settle. And in my opinion maybe not others, but I think it should not be touched to the following winter. Spring is not far away and the other lakes will support the demands of anglers through the warmer times.
Talking to Terry the other day there was nothing but postive thinking for the fishery.. For now I take back everything I said!! And here’s to lookin up not down…

TF_teabagOnce New Lake has been desillted and stocked with the carp from the stock pond it will also be left until winter before any matches.

garber steveParticipantalright jason every one has mixed veiws on johns lake and it probaly has got something to do with the fish kill on top lake cos the water runs into johns from it thats how the odd big carp got in but people say it got fished to early iam just picking brains out side the box getting people talking to get thoughts on how long it should be left for to get the best from it and i aint havin a dig remember we all fished for those carp any way take care see you on the bank some time
-
02/03/2010 at 10:22 pm #96810
TF_teabagwater from Top runs into Old or bypasses and goes out of Willi, there is no running water into Johns, but the stream which runs into peg 13 on Top lake can be diverted into Johns instead of Top if needed. The large carp in Johns escaped from Top when the lake flooded soon after Johns was built.

02/03/2010 at 10:27 pm #96812
TF_Dishyfishtebag as i mentioned!! Talking to Terry turned out to be a eye opener, he has gained so much maturity in trying to run a fisherie. He like the rest of us, wants it turned to its glory days. That means resting lakes like Johns and the new lake when its finished as long as possible.
I for one look forward to catching some of those Barbel!! I wonder if the rolling meat will work lol….

garber steveParticipanttoplights you took the words out my mouth, as i said before im glag i stared this topic cos all i want is to get people talking cos all we here is over fished over fished and khv this and khv that its to soon therto small, they the runnners and we the anglers need advise out side the box then you listen and learn and befre you no it its bloomed and back being the venue pulling them from miles away

TF_Jason Morgansteve, sounds good m8 but i think your missing something anglers can learn i agree but it is not our LAKE so all that will happen is anglers will have stronger opions on what should be done , remember a little knowledge is a dangerous thing

03/03/2010 at 8:11 pm #96946
TF_Nigel.Getting more info now, lol.
If no carp can go in, and i assume 90% of the origanal carp died from KHV, and then stocked with little carp, and then 90% of them died, them that leaves 10% of the big fish, and 10% of the little fish.
I know it was well stocked, and was then also restocked and stuffed with little carp, so assuming there are still 10% of each size left, there could still be good numbers in there.
If you could net, or estimate the numbers, you could then feed them accordingly, and with there only a smaller number in there, they will grow like crazy.
They need 2% of there body weight of 33% protien pellets per day, feed every 2 hours over the 24 hour period, (with an auto feeder) and you will soon have them little fish that are left into two pounders.
I would whack a ton of well rotted cow muck in too per acre, every month this year to get the water full of natural food, it starts the food chain with zooplanckton and then daphnai and water fleas.
With a good managed pool, and fewer fish, yoour best bet is to get those fish growing as much as possable, then when you can restock, stock the mid size fish to end with what you want. -

Good luck with it whatever you decide to do.It was not meant as a knock at you Nigel, lets just say – some of the info given to you was a bit wild and untrue…… That is the main reason why Terry does not bother to come on here often.
As for the luck, I really don’t need it because I do not run the place. lol
I am just a lodger with free digs, but I do care about the place. If only these people would talk to Terry and listen to HIS plans for the place HE runs, and not ask on here for anyone to say how they would run the place if they had a chance !!!!!

Mick, I second that ~clap
This turned into a thread on how to run Johns lake at willinghurst, the questions and info was being given out by people who fish there and the answers were being given out by Nigel, one big problem I saw is that the one person who matters most on the subject (Terry) is not in the equation.~think
Maybe another thread can be started about running a fishery and how to over come problems can be started, then we all can learn some knowledge on the subject from the fishery managers who use this forum.~think
It just needs to stay away from telling someone on how to run their fishery~clap -

TF_PikeyIf I took over a fishery, as I have no experience of fishery managemnt, I would have a look around the country and find a fishery that is superbly managed, one that everyone wants to fish due to the state of the lakes and the fish – somewhere like The Glebe.
I would then approach the person who owns / runs it and ask them for their advice. If I was really lucky then for a small fee, they might even come and look at my fishery and tell me what I should do.
But then again I don’t own or run a fishery.

TF_Nigel.I have sat in many meetings with Roy Marlow,(who owns the Glebe) and also Bruno Broughton.(the most well known fishery consutant).
They will both travel and consult.
They have both done many talks on fishery managment and at PCFA meetings.
Roy uses horse manure by the way, as he has good free access to it, its the high phosphorate you need, so cow or horse manure or even granular fertlizer will do.It is well worth getting a good fishery consultant out, worth every penny!

a ton of hit every month for the the rest of the year is 10 ton of manure, thats one hell of a lot of manure going in.
that being said everyone says my paste is (manure), so maybe my form will come good as the fish will take a likeing to it!! -

Now how did I know that LOL
I believe that Roy used 20 TONS of manure spread between the Glebe and Mallory Park last year, that’s one big pile of shite.
