A character that is for sure Des. Did a bit of boxing in his time IIRC. Very good angler. Hope he gets a compassionate release.

I think this is the guy who won the BW Champs 2 or 3 years ago.

I spoke to him before and after the match and he is a very nice chap.

Des is top bloke he’s got 18months left on his sentence. Top draw angler aswell and would always help out if you need anything.

Yeah he did aload of boxing fought prince naseem hamed amongst a few, had 100+ fights. Fought under the name Des gargano.

i think he was in the guiness book of records for having the most proffessional fights it was hundreds he used to take them at a days notice,he once fought nazeem hamed.used to fish with the same crowd as des a lot years ago he was a very good tip angler and a character as well sad news and un fortunately tax and customs are not knownn for compassion when you have had them over.des is a fighter though so you never know

I only got to know Dessie over the last 3 or 4 years when he started fishing places like Meadowlands,Blythe and Molands and found him to be a thouroughly nice bloke..He is a charachter alright and used to have a laugh with me about his predicament (why he was up in front of the judge) despite him knowing what i do for a living,just shows what sort of bloke he is really..Its true that he would help anyone out,i remember the time when i turned up at Molands without my wallet and Dessie didn’t hesitate to put his hand in his pocket and pay for my pools.
I really do hope the authorities show some compassion and release him so that he can enjoy what little time he apparently has left.

can remember fishing against des in the old barnsley festivals at wosboro res think he used to travel with a lad called mark nobody said anything wrong to those two at the draw~naughty sad news

Des is a great bloke. No matter how much he’s done the tax man for. There’s plenty worse got less. Free him now I say…

i can remember a full page article about des in the news of the world i think.it was the year he won the anglers mail matchman of the year and was about to break the record for the most fights in a year.met him at the oaks a few years ago.was surprised how modest he was considering how successful he had been at both sports.good luck mate.

Baz Gannon told me this week the bad news, 18 months to live and 18 months of his sentence left!

I first met him in the mid 90s, I didnt know who he was or his reputation.
We were in the same section on Broadmeadow in Enisskillen, and he caught a pike. At the weigh in all his fish went in the basket along with this 2lb pike, and i picked it out, and said, ‘you cant weigh that mate, they dont count’ to witch point he said ‘put it back’ this went on for a few minutes before someone said, lets call the organiser, and while that went on, we weighed his fish and the pike seperatly. (it didn’t count!)
back at the pub, i told the story, and was told i was lucky i didnt get my lights punched out, lol.

I have been friends with Des ever since, what a shame.

mark moved to northern ireland about 8 years ago dont know if he does that much fishing anymore,he fished for usa in the world champs about 3 years back with the team getting coaching off derek himself

Very sad news, great angler Des, fished many matches on Winsford flash for years that Des was a regular on too.
Seem to remember him holding the record on the flash for a while till Ant king broke it again..

Just heard that Des has been given a pardon today and will be out of prison as of tomorrow. His lad said he’s going getting his gear and going straight to Ireland and hopefully end his days there.

Nice one. Derek Willan told me last week he could be out this week, so thats good news.
He told me he is very poorly, and just wants to get out to Ireland for a weeks fishing, There are half a dozen or so going.

Glad he got his wish to get released and get that last cast!

Great news that …. had some brilliant and very funny times with Dessy in the past. Just wish I could have gone to Ireland for this week.

‘funny’ thing is -apparently a lot of the major tobacco companys ‘sell’ unlicensed stuff(about 40% of sales) via the third world , a bloke i know back fom africa had met a couple of BAT blokes who confirmed this and that other multi-nat subs. even are putting toxic waste into the manufacturing plants in the various poorer countries.

still not out gov at his nick not signed his release yet apparently. took a turn for worse yesterday very poorly in a wheelchair, oked by home office but gov is being a dick

Terrible news Mike,my wife Gill has just got the all clear today after 6 weeks of waiting with a big op as well,very big tumour,thankfully we were lucky but thousands of others are not so lucky with this terrible disease,please send my best wishes to Dessie.
