TF_bryanhParticipantAs a former member of Bradford No1 AA back in the early sixties I fished alongside John, together with Geoff Scollick, Arthur Nicholson, Tony Ramsden and many other exceptional anglers who were members of the Bradford club at that time. After moving from Wakefield to Scotland in 1966, John’s name was the first one I looked for in the match results carried by the angling weeklies and the fact that he was regularly mentioned during the 40 years which have since passed gives a perfect indication of just how good he was.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing but feel privileged to have known him.

Chublet100ParticipantJohn was a real gentleman. I worked with him for a few years at AETC in Yeadon, Leeds. He was a true professional at his job and was widely admired the world over in our profession.
He always had time for a chat and a talk about fishing. He was a truly great fisherman who could catch out of a puddle! His name is all over trophies in the Yorkshire region and elewhere but he taught me a great deal about fishing the Trent in it’s heyday. The last time I chatted with him was before the Van Den Eynde semi at Sessay last year. John and X-man gave us loads of info. I had not seen him for about 5 or 6 years but we fell straight back in to the talk of old colleagues and tales we always used to tell. I sat behind him for a while whilst we were practising and he was fishing one of the Sessay matches,he was a very unassuming man,had no airs and graces, told you everything you needed to know with a smile and a laugh.
I am pleased to have known him as a colleague and a first class fisherman.
RIP Illy and if they don’t have fishing up there in heaven, I’m not coming in.
