Things were looking exciting for this final match with a number of anglers in a position to win what is becoming a very sought after trophy.

Finally the canal was looking in good condition after the awful winter that all anglers have had to contend with and i for one expected some fantastic sport from the massive numbers of perch and roach that are present in this canal but although it was looking good, the extremely cold nights mixed with bright days seemed to have put the fish off feeding. Despite the canal not fishing as well as expected there were still some fantastic returns. In first place was Grimsby angler Tim Goldby on peg 55 with 10lb 1oz, Tim did manage to get into some of the perch with the majority of his catch on lobworm. In second place and on next peg to the winner was Dynamite/Maver Barnsley rod Joe Carass who similarly to the winner took the majority of his catch on lobworm. His final weight of 8lb 2oz was good enough to fend off travelling partner Lee Kerry Preston/Maver Barnsley who drew peg 6 and his 7lb 7oz was taken mostly on bloodworm over joker.

1st Tim Goldby Grimsby Peg 55 10lb1oz Perch on Lobworm
2nd Joe Carass Dynamite/Maver Barnsley Peg 53 8lb2oz Perch on lobworm
3rd Lee Kerry Preston/Maver Barnsley Peg 6 7lb7oz roach, skimmers and perch on bloodworm
4th Steve Winters Garbolino Harrisons Lincs County Peg 22 6lb7oz roach on bread punch
4th Tom Scholey Pole Fishing Peg 45 6lb7oz Perch on Lobworm
6th Ian Snowden Lincoln Peg 8 6lb1oz roach, skimmers and perch on bloodworm

With regards the league it was the ever impressive and extremely consistent Lee Kerry who took the individual honours with an excellent 48 out of 50 points. Close behind was another consistent angler Mark Griggs with 46 points and a better count back than midlands legend Wayne Swinscoe also on 46 points.

        1st Lee Kerry Preston/Maver Barnsley 48 Points
2nd Mark Griggs Garbolino Harrisons Lincs County 46 Points Drop 7
3rd Wayne Swinscoe Van Den Eynde/Trabucco 46 Points Drop 5
4th Chris Jenkinson Van Den Eynde 45 Points Drop 7,7
5th Steve Winters Garbolino Harrisons Lincs County 45 Points Drop 7,4

On the pairs front the league winner Lee Kerry made it a double up, with partner Phil Chesterton they edged out the long time leaders Chris Jenkinson and Alan Henry by 1 point.

1st Lee Kerry (Preston/Maver Barnsley) & Phil Chesterton (Van den Eynde) 51 Points
2nd Chris Jenkinson (Van Den Eynde) & Alan Henry (SPRO/Dynamite) 52 Points

KO Winner John Small (SPRO Lincoln Whisby) had a red letter day when Barry Wiggington the other finalist was unable to attend! So i mark this down as a defalt win! lol

i must say that i havent met many anglers who are so approachable and informative.

i wish him all the best in the semi’s and look forward to seeing him on the bank.although i am still gutted that lee and phil beat jenko and I in the pairs. lol

Well done on a brilliantly run league Ali, really enjoyed it!

On he subject of ‘Large’ Lee Kerry, he is a total credit to our sport, and deserves every success. This has been my first winter on the canals, and he and travelling partner Joe Carass have gone out of their way to help me in every way possible, from advice on rigs and bait, to watching me fish and feeding back on what I can improve on and helping me get my head around the confusing world of canal fishing.

I know that both have helped several other anglers in the same way this year, if only all top anglers were as open and helpful as they are.

Furthermore, Lee in particular has been absolutely on fire this year, and must be the most consistent angler in the country at the minute. I would put money on England calling within the next few years.

Thanks a lot chaps, and its nice to know that nice guys don’t always finish last 😀
