I own a Daiwa 412 and require a few extra tops. I am cosidering the drennan tops as its an old pole and I dont wish to spend £50 plus as I will probably update in the future and I dont know if the old daiwa tops fit the newer poles. My local shop stocks Drennan, whats your thoughts – have you tried them.

I own one of the 75g drennan tops and yeah it’s fairly heavy, i use this only in the summer on commercials for paste fishing. They are super strong and i rate them highly. I think you can get a 30g version but there’s also a 45g version too. Obviously the lighter tops are for lighter elastic.

or maybe heavy elastics with a pull bung had a few, no probs as you say 30 quid against 50 just take a bit of time

the original polemaster kits vary in weight from the ultralight competition kits at around 40g (I could be wrong) to the heavier 75g carp kits

however, there’s a new range out under the series 7 banner, there’s 3 in the range:

                silverfish, carp & cupping kit
they are all made from good quality carbon, and are all the same strength, the only difference between the silverfish & carp tops are the tip bore diameters

all 3 kits are 2.5m long & weigh 55g, I have the silverfish kits & they are not heavy or unbalanced, and at £23 a pop you really can’t go wrong

I have several of the drennan polemaster 45grm kits loaded with Preston 9,11, 13 hollow and grey hydro; all on pulla bungs never ahd a problem with anyof them.

Not built for bullying lumps. Had carp to 11lb and tench to 8lb never broken a section.

Some people have cut them back a bit further than pre-bushed and fitted black hydro with out a problem.

The polemaster are longer kits than the series 7.

Do top kits under the 7 series banner fit Maver Competion range?

Kookie, what sort of fishing do you intend on doing with the Drennan tops?

I have several of the original light top 2’s for silverfish that I use on my K47. They are brilliant. I haven’t used any of the carp tops though.

Great response, thanks, In general I fish commercials such as Monks,Hartleylands,Colemans. Elastic is white hydro,10 14 latex, and black hydro.

Its trying to find a compromise and if the universals do an adequate job then they will be fine.

Its just that I dont have enough and some time in the future I will buy my last pole, possibly a Daiwa or being a total patriot a Tricast, hence why I dont wish to spend out too much on tops. Not many down south have Tricast but the reviews are promising
