I was very interested to read Steve Ringers recent articles in Pole Fishing about using doubled elastics.
I have a series of matches to fish on a venue which has good open water fishing for comet goldfish and small carp averaging around 1-2lb.
Up to now I have been using hydro white and black through a long top 2 (3m).
I am keen to try doubled 5 and 6 slip elastic but have a couple of questions – firstly, should I be running it through the whole 3m top 2, or just a match top 2, which is around 1.8m long?
Secondly, what is the best way to connect it to the bung and at the business end? – I currently use a heavy braid loop/knot on my hydros.
I am assuming it should be fitted pretty slack, and lubricated with slip lubricant before use.
Any advice from people who have had success with this approach would be welcome.
        Thanks, Downunder.

double 5 through the whole top kit should be fine

first observation is that the slip elastic is only 5m long so double would be 2.5M max,

1.8M is nearly 6 foot, it be tempted to go for that

sounds like you still have your number 1 section in? personally id whip that out and put it through the 2 and 3

and personally I wouldnt lube it just leave it as it is and use water as normal

I would say put it through the match top, and go for double 6. Double 5 through 3m power kit would be far too soft and stretchy, even carp of that size would pull you all over the place and you’d have no control.

I would stick to hydro. If you are used to using hydro and find it suits your style, then why change? I am sure Mr Ringer will correct me if I am wrong on this, but I do not think that he was ever a big fan of hydro. I guess he has found doubled elastics more suited to his style than the other alternative, which I believe in his case was single solid latex.

There are plenty of people on here who have tried doubled 5 or 6 and gone back to hydro (or other hollow elastics), so I am going to stick to what I know until I see some compelling evidence to the contrary.

Im using double 5 for 90% of my fishing at the minute, i have used it with and without a pull bung and fully recommend to use it WITH..

Most of my fishing is on a commy stuffed with ide up to 1lb, carp mainly around the 1-2lb mark, but with the odd lump that can throw you out if you dont use the pulla bung..

I like the preston variety BTW, bead at the bottom out of the way, rather than a specific kit with it hanging out the side.

Double 6 is a tad harsh for the silvers, but if its mainly carp then maybe that could be the way to go..??

I tried latex and it didnt seem to work as well as the preston slip elastic. Theres a perfect amount on 1 spool of slip for one of my kits, so at £2-25 a spool it works out a lot cheaper than hollows etc.. can be changed as often as you want without it breaking the bank.. lol

AS for the connectors, i much prefer a simple plastic connector, and just have it threaded on and leave it free running so to speak.

I was a sceptic of double elastic for ages, I tried it but didnt like it.

then I tried it with the original preston blue 5 and I’ve been mega impressed. I had over 100lb in 2 hour at tunnel barn and never had a problem with a fish (without a puller), most never knew they were hooked

been trying the 6 and 8, cant make my mind up on it.

the double 5 with a puller will land anything upto 5-6lb without a minutes bother. and it comes out a foot on gudgeon lol

Gary – I agree what your saying but until you’ve tried something you dont know if it will make you better.

Phil taylor won 13 world titles then threw his darts in the bin for a new set and has become even better.

people said he was a retard for doing it

I guess that partly depends on if you have time to practice. I only manage to fish about half a dozen times a year now that I am living in London, and I certainly don’t have much time to experiment with new kit, so I tend to stick to what I trust unless I see something compelling to suggest that I am doing it wrong!

Classic example being that all of this MFS chat goes straight over my head… I know TF; therefore, I stick to it!

why does living in london stop you fishing? I live 10 mile from london I still go 2-3 times a week
