They are an attractant. With the sea being so vast, smell isn’t always such an attractor. Also the sea is clear, bright coloured beads show up well. Most sea fish only ever see a hook once, so they’re not all that line shy. They also tend to be very inquizative. Some bright beads on a place rig gets their interest, and when they realise there’s a meal waiting too, you have your fish.
