This World Cup is Englands best chance since 1966, read the link and understand just why we have a proper shot at winning it.

TF_caster robParticipantDidn’t you say we had a great chance last time Bob?
Something about a “golden generation” as I remember.

TF_SwimfeederNot me Rob!
I was never a fan of Sven or his staff, I severely criticized his choice of the “Boy Wonder” Walcott at the time and the way we played.
This time I am nailing my colours to the mast, this time England have a proper manager/coach, Cappello is the real deal, I do not believe we can win it without a huge slice of luck though as good as HE is, events will have to go England’s way too, but underdogs do win things occasionally, and this could be England’s time.
Logic tells me it will be Spain, and we could me them en route, but when it gets to the knockout stage anything can and does happen, by the way, I believe we will draw with the yanks on Saturday. -

TF_CraftytaftyI would be delighted if we won and will be supporting them but although I agree Capello is quality, you can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear

TF_carpmagicParticipantI think we can win it but at the sametime i dont expect us to play great football along the way. If we are to go all the way it will be a case of grinding out results as opposed to playing our way to the final.

TF_kev825I’m not going to hold my breath.
Much as I want the boys to win and good as Cappello is – I just don’t see it happening.
But – I’ll be supporting them all the way…. -

I trust it will be accepted in the spirit in which it is offered?

TF_Gary the gudgeonSpain have more chance of a wet summer than winning the World cup.

TF_SwimfeederNo need to apologise Rob, I admit I WAS hopeful England would do better, and perhaps if Rooney had not kicked the wrong ball, we would have progressed past Portugal, then who knows what might have happened?

They are European Champions and have just smashed Poland 6-0, they have a fantastic squad of players and the group stages will be no problem for them, no GTG, they have a very real chance mate.

So you definitely didn’t refer to the 2006 squad as a golden generation, right here on this blog?
I’d swear on oath that you did.
Pity it was the “old” style site at that time.
I was beginning to think I was sick of the imminent tournament due to the meeja excitement at the beginning of the week, then Badiel and Skinner were on the radio on Tuesday afternoon and I was sure of it.

TF_SwimfeederNo I did not.
The very point of this thread is to highlight my believe that the manager is far more important than the players.
I am not calling the present England squad the “Golden Generation” this year either.
Cappello will be the difference this time round, not the players, and you can cut and paste my last sentence if you wish.

Andy GParticipantHmmm. Fabio the real deal eh? Then why has he ended up with essentially the same team as Sven, playing the same predictable football with Lampard and Gerrard, Heskey and Rooney? When appointed (and after the first few games) I thought “yep, a new dawn” now I’m not so sure.
I will however be offering my full support and sincerely hope I am way off the mark. -

TF_SwimfeederI agree the squad of players are almost identicle, that is why I posted this;

TF_PaddyI think you may be right on that Bob, it is essentially the same squad, but i would take Capello over Sven all the time.
It may get a bit slow and we may draw more than a few peolple are hoping for, but lets not forget that France basically won the cup in 1994?? (I think it was 94) drawing alot of games, then either winning in extra time, or penalties.
Extra time will do us nicely, but we’ll be scuppered if they go to pens!
Nothing can be read from those last warm up games, nothing at all. -
