If any of you Norfolk lads are out and about on the broads around Horning before Friday can you let me know how it is fishing please?I am coming down for 2 weeks and im a little worried about this dredging at Potter Heigham. Many thanks TD

Don’t know about the dredging but it shouldn’t affect Horning which is on the R. Bure rather than the R. Thurne.

The R. Yare fished well today despite the big tide that flooded all the match.

Richard can you post a detailed report on the river yare match please mate?

How many anglers, what was caught where etc etc.

Hi mate, I did put a brief report up in this post – https://www.total-fishing.com/forum.aspx?g=posts&m=257553&#257553

I have beefed it up where I know the detail and I think there were 60+ anglers but I could be wrong there.

Cheers Richard, the signs are looking good for an excellent summers fishing, what do you reckon it costs to fish a match now? and how much did the winner pick up?

Didn’t look at what the winner won but I don’t go fishing to win money anyway. I go because I enjoy it. To me it is the fishing and the banter that counts not any pools win. I got £30 for the section and if I have a pick up, then great. I give half of any winnings to the missus anyway for putting up with me!

You know as well as I do what the bait requirements are for the Yare but for anyone else who wants to read this I will go through them. They are nowhere near what is required for the R.Wye matches though.

Fortunately, I am lucky and can afford the £16 pools, the pint of casters, 1/2 kilo of worms and kilo of crumb together with the kilo of mixed ‘continental’ ground baits. As you know that lot is for feeder fishing. If you want to fish the pole for roach then you can treble the casters and ground bait but drop the worms. You only need a handful of maggots for either method. To that you need to add the petrol from Ipswich which isn’t cheap these days but Burchy and I drive on alternate days. I appreciate that there are plenty who can’t afford it though. Especially the youngsters.

I will have a pleasure session up there when the bream are really having a go and give the old fish meal and pellets a go to see how it works. I know that you have caught on them pleasure fishing but like me struggled with them in a match but you never know, time moves on.

However, after 8 and a half months of running matches and then fishing them 3 times a week at the Suffolk Water Park (6 minutes away from me rather than the hours drive to the Yare) I really enjoyed the match and look forward to the next 3 and a half months. I’ll only fish Saturdays and appreciate that my 20lb of yesterday may well be the only 20lb weight I have all year but there will always be ‘bag up’ sessions on Weds and Sundays at the Park. Probably more bites on the Yare though.

By the way, the work done on the bank and pegs, raising the levels and putting hardcore down on the pegs to the left of the pub in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s is now being done at the concrete bridge sections. I understand that they are piling at least a part of that section as well. I think this is work being done by the EA rather than the Broads Authority but I could be wrong. If they carry on like this maybe we will be able to hang up our waders eventually! Peg 56 was dry at the top of the tide yesterday whereas a couple years back on a tide as high as that it would have flooded.

Thanks for the interesting comments Richard, what has been done about the lily-pads on the shallow bends? Has the EA cleared these areas?

Morning mate, have look at this link, if you have sat nav, just use the postcode for the pub and it will take you right up to the match length, a short walk to the right of the pub is the “boards” section, plenty of piled bank to fish from, to the left is “Cyanide Straight” again, piled banks so no waders required, you will catch bream and roach on the feeder or if you wish you can fish the pole but you will need plenty of GB,hemp and casters!

Haven’t a clue mate. I only walked from the pub to peg 56 on roach bay which as you know is just 150 yds or so of fast deep water on a flood. Not much chance of any lillies there. Didn’t hear anyone moaning about their peg when I got back to the pub

You will need much heavier gear than you would at Wroxham. Feeders from 1oz to 21/2oz and pole floats up to 5 grams. Forget small hooks, 16’s to 12’s with 0.13 or 0.15 hook lengths. On the feeder I use 6lb mainline. Day tickets are available on the bank.

Another spot to look at is St Benets Abbey on the lower Bure. Get your day ticket from the General Stores in Ludham the day before you fish and find the access road. There is a turning near Ludham Hall Farm marked by a small unobtrusive wooden finger post pointing down the farm lane which leads out to the long concrete farm road over the marshes. The sign is often overgrown! Best look now on Google to find it. There is a car park by the river. Fish from first light until 7 am, by then the boats will be unbearable!
