Bailliff i know was recently told by RSPB member pal that a pair of swans on an lake will actively chase away cormorants due to their territorial nature if a breeding pair.
Anybody have anecdotal or evidence to confirm this?

I always found that a pair of swanshot cartridges to be a more permanent answer~shh

Another RSPB myth waiting to be exposed by anecdotal evidence.

Reckon it depends on the expanse of water. I’ve certainly seen Swans, Canadian Geese on water with a Comorant working it !!

No, I dont think so, swans are too lazy and slow, get a pair of Muscovy ducks, they will chase everything off.

I dont really think they would have a lot of success with a Cormorant though, as they spend half there time under water, then up and away!

the club put them on a cub water ,much to the delight of a breeding pair and they proceeded to sink the false ones” swans that is” ps the black plague still visit in less numbers though~ ~clap ~clap

May be some truth in it Adrian, the sandown boat lake up the road has a load of swans on it and the adjoining river and though I’ve seen cormarants flying over numerous times I’ve never seen one actually on the water.

There is a breeding pair on their currently and they’ll chase of anything including me and my dogs 🙂

Could also be there’s no fish in there though 😉

A venue local to me had a cormorant issue. The owner used to drive his car down to the waters edge and wait to shoot any he spotted. After a few weeks it became apparent That they backed off when he was there but it seemed it was the car not the gun that was the deterrant. A car remains there to this day (no wheels or body etc)

                    works a treat~clap
