TF_JohnHAs a regular visitor to White Acres back to the Andy Seary days we have decided this year to have a change and we visit S/Moor at the end of July.
How do the two compare?
Any advise on methods and local eateries very much appreciated as its all new ground to us and we only have a week. Just hope the sun shines as we have had some dreadfull weather at W/A for the last three years now in late July early August.
So bad in fact that we dare not book for 2 weeks just in case its bad. -

AnonymousThe two venues different as chalk & cheese.
S/moor is a chill pill, out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by woodland and so tranquil.
If your stopping in the lodges then you will only find Andys tackle shack on site and will have to travel to get something to eat.
The village of Dolton is a couple of miles down the road with a nice pub called the Rams Head which does nice food and ale.
Three miles in the other direction is the tiny village of Iddesleigh with the Duke of York pub which does fab food and ale.
Other than that there is a Pizza/Kebab/Chippy take a way at Winkleigh a few miles down the main road.I’m normally there every year with the lads on our annual fishing holiday second week in August but i’m having to give it a miss this year cos of a clash with something else, gutted, will really miss it.

TF_Fred DavisJohnH, I am there next week on the postals festival main methods are bomb and pellet,(8mm and 11mm screttins elite) pellet wag, pole can play a part for carp margins or long deep and shallow or when targetting silvers, have a look on the stafford moor web page as it has a good video of John “silvers” green fishing for the skimmers and also a video on fishing the bomb and pellet and the conker, the grub in the rams head is superb and very good value for money, sometimes worth a mixed approach targetting the carp early and late whilst sacking up on skimmers mid match.

TF_MARKHLDASI’m a recent convert to SM from 15 years in Ireland.
The fishng is great from Silvers to carpies and you can catch on many styles, except it would seem the feeder???
The big difference for me is that it’s only a fishing holiday as it is in the middle of nowhere.
Where as in Ireland you had the craic an all that it brings with it and I will assume WH has Newquay and all that brings with it.
EG SM is women free zone, and maybe like me we don’t touch but do like the flirt and laughs that the ladies bring to a night on the beer.

TF_ubatAll the lodges have great facilities, if you wish you can cook your own food, not for me, pub every night.

TF_MICK THE BOOKIEJohn…..You will love it mate, and i know it will be the first of many visits for you and your mates. As already said the fishing is so varied, and if you like your Silver fishing, you will be in heaven.Personally i have had good results in matches on my beloved “Conker and Magic wand”.Dont be afraid of a positive atack with double banded 11m pellet on the bomb(“the bollox”).As Mark has said there is a shortatge of women in the area, but we have hired the local bus on occassions, and popped into town and have pulled the local talent…We have had some great craics, and sometimes missed the next mornings match…HAPPY DAYS…Have a great time fella.

TF_JohnHThanks for the tips, we are staying on site in a lodge for a familly holiday. I anticipated it would be quiet. Me and my lad will fish every day whilst the girls will head out on their own. The pubs nearby sound great so guess that where we will be.
Fred we are down 31st July just as your week finishes.
Just hope the weather is ok, as I said in my first post the last three summer holidays at W/A have been washouts. -

TF_Fred DavisJohn you will have a great time and I notice we have high pressure slowly moving in from next week, if it stays around you could get some great weather, last year we booked in august and had the tail of a hurracane on the last day, bit of a nightmare the rams head is a great place to eat(not only very good food but because all three local pub compete for your trade exceptionally good value), if you can book in for your meal do so as you may lose out otherwise, saturday nights is exceptionally busy

TF_baitchefParticipantThe pubs are great and obviously sociable, but if you have time pop into Tavistock. You can stock up on some great local produce there. We have a very good cheese shop, farmers markets and good fruit and veg. There is a very good wine supplier and your family might appreciate what is on offer. There is an exceptional deli/old fashioned grocery store that I am sure your wife will love, its called creebers and stocks all the old fashioned brands as well as lots of very good quality produce. There is an Italian deli and some good bakers. Make the most of the lovely lodges and self cater, and if you get a chance (weather) why not dine outside your lodge?

TF_Steve LockettPop in to Tavistock? That’s like saying: “if you are visiting London, don’t forget to call in and say hello to me in Dover!” ~clap
Torrington is an interesting walk around for the girls. Old fashioned shops, not many high street chains, so a bit different. Good Indian there as well called Maya (speaking as someone who eats and cooks real Indian food, not your normal Banglish stuff which we get here).
I have just finished a new film for Andy about a Residents’ Match. It is not on his website yet, but you can watch it through my Stafford Moor page on coarsefish-torbay.co.uk, or go straight to my You Tube channel at V2VSteve.
John Green has been having 80-100+lbs of skimmers every Sunday match for the last couple of months ~shh
