I use a cage feeder when I want to introduce bigger soaked pellets and lots of them in an attacking aggressive manner. I use a method feeder when I want the fish to focus on a small pile of feed. I’ll use a bomb or conker when I think the fish are a bit spooky.

Method feeder has a basic principle. You have a pile of feed in a ball on the deck with your hook bait hidden just inside or siting on top. Fish comes along and sucks this ball of feed in including the hook bait and hook. Because of the 4-6 inch hook length. There is a very big chance that the fish will get self hooked by the weight of the feeder on such a short hook length.

With the cage feeder. Your hook bait is not in with your feed like the method. Its several inches or more normally several feet away from your feeder and its contents. The only way to put the hook and hook bait near to the feed. Is to drag the hook bait back to where the cage feeder had landed once its contents have emptied after a few minutes. Fish can also pick up your hook bait and reject it because if is on a longer length of line. So, does not always tighten the line between hook and feeder or tip of your rod. However, with the cage feeder. There are some potential advantages. You can fish on the drop with a long tail for fish responding to the splash of the feeder hitting the water on a very regular basis. As with the meat or pellet feeder methods. The aim with this way of fishing the cage feeder. Is to cast out very regularly to create a small splash at least every 2 minutes. The build up of feed and splashing brings fish into the swim and compete for feed. By using a long tail above the cage feeder. Fish are able to be targeted on the drop. Often, the tail is 3ft/4ft long. On its day. Its a deadly way to fish at distance and produces massive weights of fish!

Steve Ringer had 180lb from the Glebe last week to win the ACA Masters match. 100lb of this was caught on a cage feeder with at least a 20 inch hook length and dead maggots on the hook. The meat feeder and pellet feeder methods have accounted for many big match winning weights this year.
