cracking read (what happened to him)?
pikeys progress was a decent read (you should do a few more mr pearson)…always thought david hall himself could spin a line. (though he always said he wasnt any good at it).

basherParticipantAndy Neal – Hair rig length
One of the best articles i’ve read, and one that i could relate, and apply to my own fishing.

TF_GavinKim Milsom’s articles in Match Angling Plus (or Angling Plus and whatever else the mag was called!) were brilliant!
Match Fishing in 2002 had some brilliant articles with Andy Findlay too- the meat paste, braid fishing in far bank snags and the method feeder articles all stick in my mind as being superb and very new at the time.
More recently, Steve Ringers articles in Pole Fishing magazine eclipse anything else, with explanations of why things were set up that way or thinking behind what baits instead of an “I sat here, used this from my sponser as it’s brill, did this and this is what I caught” article.

TF_fishachuck1The funniest article i read was one by Jan Porter in Dave Halls Match Fishing, many moons ago when i was a teen. He was talking about fishing a match on the Trent where he filled it in and the looks he got from everyone around him thinking he was out of his tree. I’ve never laughed as much reading a fishing mag since.

TF_budnuddParticipantIt is a real pity Giles isn’t writing for any of the mags anymore- I always found them very informative. Any reason why he no longer does it??
Steve Ringers articles are always top drawer as are Martin Bowlers!

TF_One Out of the FrameTactically I think it was a series that was entitled, “Fishing My Way,” by Billy Makin.
Although it was aimed at canal fishing and approaching a peg with a series of methods that would maximise the result, i.e. starting on the punch then switching to a short pole before having a look on the caster, it greatly influenced how I approached my fishing…..
1979 or ’80 probably!
Giles’s articles were always, at the very least, thought provoking and if you only glean one idea from the entire magazine then it was a purchase worth making imo.
Articles that I don’t enjoy are the advertorials. Whilst I can appreciate that they are necessary do we really need to be force fed?
What particularly ‘got my goat’ a couple of years back was the series on fishing the method: If you weren’t fishing with a certain groundbait then you wouldn’t catch….. 3/12 later (nursing for three months) are full page articles exclaiming, “I’ve been secretly using brand X for 3/12 and if you aren’t using that you won’t catch anything!”

TF_Johnny MacAnything by Giles, always very informative and innovative ~clap
As for humour, Sid Huggins was always VERY funny. Some writers THINK they’re funny when they really are not!!!

TF_Leaky Lloydmine has to be one by mark pollard on canals in match fishing about 4 or 5 years ago,,
i was wanting to tackle a section of my local sheffield and tinsley canal which was a similar canal to where mark was so when i went i copied every little detail that mark gave including float, hook, line and shotting patterns,
i used the exact same gb mix and set up exact same swims and fed them as similar to mark as i could,,
i can still remember it now,, it was an absolutely crackin day,, the float never stopped going under!!!!
i think i learned more that day about canal fishing than i have done in all the time i fished canals,i dont get to fish canals much anymore, but when i think back to how many silvers there where to ponder
it gets me wanting to hit the tow paths again,,, im defintely gunna start going again the fishing was awsome!more recently, it as to be (again in matchfishing) lee kerry’s lurning curve!!!
for no specific reason really,, its just a crackin read each month and you begin to appreciate how much work lee puts into his fishing,,
it came as no suprise that he cleaned up this year at white acres in the parkdean and the festival before it which i believe only a couple of anglers have done in the same year!!!
awsome!!! just awsome ! -

TF_rocketFeederI think Giles maybe making a return to MF next month? Have a read of the ‘Next Month’ section, I’m sure it mentions Giles…
Best article I can remember was Kim Milsom reporting on a canal match somewhere near London. I remember there was a pub opposite him called ‘The Galleon’, his peg was 10m wide and he described his approach, feeding, rigs and all the little changes he made throughout the match. I have used advice from this one article many times to good effect. I think it maybe the article where he described the difference that 1 inch in depth can make to the stamp of Roach caught. Very very good article. In terms of present day articles, Lee Kerry without a doubt is one of the best. I also rate the coverage of the world champs very highly, I think it’s Fisky that does those and they are very good.

TF_One Out of the FrameDave Harrell wrote a couple of series one of which I think was, “Harry’s Theme.”
I used to go out with someone from Stourport and fished the Lyttleton matches at the time so always thought they were a good read.
Chris Campling wrote some superb stuff too especially on fishing the lobworm on canals. They have certainly caught me fish and almost qualified me for a Fisho’!
There were also a few articles by the Image team that were excellent: Rob Hewison I think and a guy who I used to fish against a lot a Tunnel but can’t remember his name. From Banbury I think…

TF_SmeagleI liked the series of features that Bait Guru, Archie Braddock wrote in DH’s Coarse Fishing. I still use his bait theories today, shame old age (sorry Arch) creeps up on the wise ones.

TF_baitchefParticipantI’m not sure its the best, but Kim Milsom’s stuff that’s been running in The Angling Times match supplement is very good. It sort of takes you back to the basics and the fundamentals.

TF_NoCarpPleaseOOTF – was it Kevin Folwell that you were thinking of? Rob Hewison’s articles were also very good. I can vouch that he would include pretty much everything in them that was shared with team mates (or was it just that he told me nowt?).
I generally read mags for entertainment, rather than to learn. So I always liked the stories / diaries rather than the “how to” articles – particuarlly where it was written by a relatively oridnary angler, rather than a star. Wading On was brilliant, and there was another one about London postal region where I can’t remember the author. There was a recent series by a browning Wickford angler that was pretty good too.

TF_SelfeyAgree with the Kim Milson and Giles as great.
But the one I remember was the one where Lasher Laraman (??) started carp fishing on comercials. Also any interviews with the greats like Ashurst and Ivan.
