I fished the River Gade at Croxley near Watford.
Punch on the pole got me 3 roach and a chublet.
Changed swims and trotted maggot for perch, bleak and gudgeon. Nothing big but it was good to get out and fish light gear . Anyone else go today?

I’m waiting for the Leam to come to me! lol

Funnily enough, it will be a walk on the upper Avon with a float rod that will be my next excursion. Last day of the season about five years ago I had 99 fish: roach to a pound, chub to 3 and dace to about 6oz. I deliberately packed up without doing the ton!

I love the colours of the river this time of year, ‘crunch’ under your feet when it is frosty and the stillness that a Winter’s morning gives you. It’s easy to think that you are the only person on the planet on days like that.

Glad you banked a few Simon.

Got a re-arranged match on the R Gipping tomorrow. First time out for 6 weeks so I should be really looking forward to it. 25 years ago I could have expected roach bites all day long on the waggler or bream on the tip. 90lb bags of bream were caught and 10lb bags of roach fairly common.

Tomorrow there may be the odd tench or bream caught but to be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if we all blanked. The river has been really hit by cormorants and fish stealer’s over the last few years. The roach are non existent and the nearly all the bream have gone just a few tench left really.

            Sad, very sad.

Rearranged Xmas match on the R Colne tomorrow.
Will be looking for my first fish since Nov 7th ! (3 weekends off with cracked ribs, then two blanks and a cancellation)
Having seen the nasty snowmelt colour of the river today, and with an expected good turnout, theres probably a majority of the pegs that I won’t feel confident of catching it…

I was right, I blanked along with everyone else. I did win a box of chocolates on the raffle though.

The strange thing about today was that I had a tench roll in my swim and saw 3 others roll in the adjacent pegs and we still couldn’t catch anything!

shame that Richard, but you were spoilt on the Yare last autumn….
wonder how the runner got on today?~think

And, as if by magic, here I am !
Drew peg 61 just below the sluice bridge which I really didn’t want- always bits there but hardly ever enough to do any good and chub generally only show there in summer.
47 not very big things, mainly roach, all on punch for 2-0-0. Still, that was 47 more fish than at least two thirds of the field had.
Four chub for 17-0 won it , then two for 8-9,two for 5-6 and then one for 5-1-8 last in frame.

Won a nice bottle of Moet & Chandon.

My first fish of 2011 was today, a nice sized carp at White Acres. Trouble was it was a silvers only match! Had another 8 as well, solid!!

You are right Simon, I can’t complain. The R Wensum in Norwich City Centre is fishing really well as well. It is a tributary of the R Yare and a lot of fish move up there from the lower reaches. New Years Eve there was a 36lb to win it, (mostly roach with a few skimmers) plenty of 20’s and a lot of high double figure weights.

Only trouble is, it is right in amongst the night clubs and bars, concrete banks and not far from the footy. With a bladder like mine these days it isn’t somewhere that I can fish comfortably!!

15lb of roach, with a couple of perch and skimmers thrown in, from the 40ft drain in the fens.

cheers si, when you’re over this way again we’ll have to have a sesh on the drains. Was that a worm and joker caught net? I keep trying worm and joker round here, but it attracts too small a stamp of fish to be worth the effort most of the time.
