Talking of icebreakers, I was reading how to make one by Stu Conroy in this months UKMatch magazine and note stu uses a 1m length of chain.
Does the length have to be shorter than the depth of water, so the weight is suspended when cutting the ice with the chain? Or doesn’t it really matter?

Karponi, better to have a longer chain as you can pull onto the chain until you feel the weight anyway. Also if the knot that you have tied onto the chain goes under the ice it can get stuck and is a nightmare to pull it out!
          Hope this helps mate.

Thanks Amer I thought the same. For instance if I’m on our local canal the track is about 5ft deep, so for the knot to stay above the ice I would need about a 2m length of chain allowing for angle, 1m of chain would nowhere near be enough.
