        Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer any solutions to my question? I fished a match on Saturday at Manor Farm, Windmill Pool. The pool is fairly deep, about 9foot. I didn`t do too good but I had six carp/F1`s but lost two. They were not foul hooked around their body but two of the fish I managed to land had the hooks just outside of their mouth`s almost as if it was where their moustache would be if you understand where I mean? The two I lost, I did manage to get them up towards my net and could see the line going towards their mouth area thats why I say they wasn`t foul hooked around the body also the fight, you could feel they was hooked around the mouth, if that makes sense. The first fish I lost was a mirror about 4lb and the second fish I lost was an F1 about 2.5lb. Would it be maybe I needed to make my rig more positive? I did pull some of my droppers closer to the hook. I was fishing a size 18 B911 on ).13 then changed to 0.11 hooklength, just touching bottom, with an 4mm expander on the hook. I have had this problem before not just at this fishery but quite a few places especially wher the F1`s are common. Any help would be gratefully recieved. Thanks

          typical of how f1s feed
          mouthing the bait or sucking and blowing very quickly.

          carp also do it when they arnt really hungry but want to investigate something thats in front of em.

          it happens a lot at this time of the year, a good tip when there doing this is to use as light a gauge hook as you dare and use a very light bait ie corn skin or bread punch, that way when they do suck they tend to take it further back into there gobs, resulting in proper hook holds….

              As has been said it’s typical for the time of year! I hooked five fish on Sunday, losing two. Of the three landed one was hooked just outside of the mouth and two actaully in their barbules!

              Don’t fish too heavy and take your time playing them and you’ll land more, but you can’t totally avoid it.

                I know i keep going on a bit but the hook in the loop/double bulking is good for this as when you do hit a bite its nearly always in the top lip. You could also try laying on a bit with a bit of bristle showing and wait for a proper bite?
                Also if there is the odd bigger fish, don’t ignore double corn dead depth, just nick the kernels and make sure there is plenty of point showing. I am no expert but I have caught a few in the past doing that.

                  This happens a lot on commercials. 9 foot is too deep for the fish to feed comfortably on the deck all day. Even if there are ony a few fish in your peg they will still come up a foot or two off bottom. The only way to solve it is to loose feed with a catty and regulate your depth until you start hooking properly. It might help to have a bit of bristle showing to help read the bites. Or you can feed a line down the bank to find 5 feet of water and try that. It isnt always as productive but its a good back up line.

                    Thanks everyone. At one point I did start slowly feeding by the catty but I never thought to try and come up to try and find the fish. I kind of thought maybe they had backed off, so what I did was to try a meter to the left and right and also I tried going from 14.5 mtrs to 16 mtrs where I did have one more fish but I lost it. Perhaps I should of come up off the deck or at least tried this. One question I would ask is if I start coming off the deck so say I`m fishing 7` in 9` of water, do you still keep lifting and dropping the rig or do you leave it dead sill waiting for a bite? Thanks for all your thoughts, they will all be in my armoury next time.

                      On the pole I’d work it, yet when you fish a pop-up on the tip you sit and wait ~think

                      Try them and see what works on the day!

                        I’m not sure if this is off topic but sometimes when it’s cold and you lift and drop, the fish will watch the bait fall, then after a bit they drop down and suck it in off the bottom. I fished a match years ago at Stafford moor, and finished just outside the frame from peg 36. The week previously the match was won from peg 3 and the guy got through 5 big tins of corn and landed just under a ton fishing the same way. Anyway I fished corn to the nets that separate the lakes and without a doubt I would feed a few grains, lower the bait in, lift and drop and after 30 odd seconds or so, get a bite. It was uncanny and just about every single fish Fed the same way. I went on to balls it up a bit and struggled towards the end but it was fascinating. Waffle over.
