  Fishing a small tributary of the river lea I had a nice bag of hemp roach however I seemed to be pulling out of too many fish using a pole and number five elastic with .0.10 line 0.9 hooklength and a size 18 B511 the crunch came when I lost a very large roach with a hook pull, what hemp hooks do you recomend? as I need to improve the ratio of fish landed as I suffered a number of hook pulls on the day.
  
  not bad for a river less than two feet deep.
  
  But should have been a much bigger bag Doh

  Always used a B511 in 20 or 22 though, never had much of a problem, maybe a 4 elastic might be better.

  me to, Nathan, the reason for the bigger hook is I have some of that mega sized hemp, helps to keep the sprats at bay

  Dunno if it was me or a bad packet of hooks, but the last 2Ts I used seemed to go blunt very quick.
  
  I switched to the 3405 and they seem (so far) to be much better.

  I tried various ways of hooking the hemp,hook in the end and through hook in the split etc the only thing I didn’t have was haired hemp may have to prepare some for the next sesssion.

  Rather than fiddling around with a hair try using a spike. Take an eyed hook something like a 18/20 (hook sizes vary so much) light/med wire cut off three quaters or so of the bend so your left with the hook shank with a slight kink in the end you can bend it more if you need to. Slip the eye over a micro barbed hook of choice and push the hemp on the spike. Give the spiked hemp a quick rattle to see if its secure and away you go.Easy hooking for when they are feeding well, don’t forget to use a small barbed hook or you lose the spike. This works well with monster hemp. Just to add something else to think about i had a few nice catches of roach on wheat this year as change bait, easier to hook, colour or flavour if you want to.

  The Drennan super carbon Maggot is like the B511 but with marginally thicker wire, a very nice hook

  Have used the 3405, it is a slightly thicker and heavier hook.
  
  Could the hemp of been too big, masking the point slightly and a 16 would of been better? 18 is my go to hook sizefor normal hemp, and I rarely bump them.
  
  Also, were the having it, or being finiky, as again that can be a reason for poor hook hold.
  
  Hooking it through the end blunts the hook fairly qickly, did the problem persist after you changed the hook length, and is this the first time you’ve had problems or is this a problem you’ve had for a while?

  Be carefull of getting the B611 off ebay tho lads I got some dodgy ones the spades were to big and they kept breaking .

  Hello Fred i personally can`t see the problem being the hook. The problem may be the elastic you are using as Nathan said a number 4 or even 3 may be better.Also the problem may be the way the fish are feeding and how you are feeding. You may need to get the fish to compete more for the feed so feed less.
  
  Nice to see the roach are still about in the Broxbourne area as someone told me that all the Roach had been eaten by those lovely black birds.~think

  Thinking about it, would also say you were fishing far too heavy. A number 3, with a 0.06 or 0.07mm hooklength would have probably led to more confident bites, and a better hook hold due to them taking it more positively. In two feet of water, a number is more likely to lead to fish splashing and spooking the shoal more, again leading to more finikey bites and poorer hook holds.
  
  On the old river nene near me, it flows pretty heavy. When fishing up the far shelf with hemp, in 2 ft ish, I tend to fish a 4 x10 or 12 float, number 3 through 3, 18 b511 to a 0.07mm hooklength, and rarely bump fish

  Sensas 3405 in a 18 is my starter for hemp, athough a 511 in a 18 is my alternative.
  Hooklength being 0.08
  I would agree in that you may have been a bit heavy elastic wise.

  hi Chris I must admit on the day I fed very little as the bites went ify if I overfed, very little and not so often lol, also the roach were shoaled up under the bridge support, a foot away from the concrete would not yeild a bite yet 9 inches in towards it and it was a different peg, a lot of the fish were very lightly hooked and a fair few bites were little nudges or the float moving right to left or left to right, however it was a nightmare to connect with the fish until they took the float right under, I had a feeling the roach were holding the grain in between there lips but not taking it properly,I will obviously drop down a size in elastic and only stepped up to a 5 as there proper caster sized roach, still a few tips gleaned and obviously the sensas hooks sound worth a try, as for the spike not sure on that idea when I talk about hair rigged hemp it is the hemp that has a hair on it not the hooklength hook, the idea is to pass a needle with fine mono through the centre of the hemp tie a loop to secure the line on the hemp and then hook your hook under the line on the hemp to secure the hook.On the day obviously I made sure the hook point was exposed after placing in the hemp, when your pulling out of that many you ring the changes and try to sort it,or thats what you should be doing! still I will be back to have another crack at them as I want a 35lb + bag then maybe I might have a crack at the chub again
