What are the main advantages of using an extra long landing net handle as favoured by so many top match anglers ?

You can clear ice out of your swim at a greater distance.

If you fish venues where the vegetation or weed goes out a long way they can be invaluable, (generally rivers and non-commercials).

Also as others have highlighted it’s a lot easier to net big fish on long rod if you have a long landing net handle.

For everyday fishing on commercials a 3 piece take apart 3.2 m handle is more than adequate

Often you can net your fish further out as it ‘glides in’ before it gets moody, and it’s banked sooner.

Personally the sooner landed and netted the better imho for the fish as it hasn’t been worn out by overplaying it because you can’t reach it, but that doesnt mean Skul-dragging.

when you have no thumb on the netting hand, the extra length of pole makes a much needed counter balance.

At Barston we are often reeling in a F1 from 60 or 70 yards, for it to fall off at the net, i found last year, it was better to have shorter rod (10 foot) and a longer net handle, so they come up closer, and you can net them before they bounce off!

3 yrs ago i fished the world club champs in france on the river sevre at niort, whilst ther i noticed that most continental teams used longer landing nets than us with the italians using landing net handles of 7 metres.
these were really useful for netting big bream and skimmers which came up along way out in the strong flow.

Fishing on the river Wensum in Norwich at low water it can be 3.5metres to the water from the concrete banks!

rather than spending hard earned- i have a heavy cheapo leeda ‘assasin’ margin pole about nine metres if i glued a thread in the no.4 would this do the job? as i think weed on some venues can be a ‘mare.
