When using 100mm hook lengths for carp using the method or lead what is the general consessus on line dia(B/S)? I normally use 0.18mm (6.6lb) but was thinking of stepping up to 0.20mm (8.0lb). Would it make much difference especially in winter when the water is clearer or does it not matter when it is nailed to the bottom.

Just an example here, i just fished a match nr sheffield and won using 015 power line down the edge in completely gin clear water so IMO i dont think it makes a jot of difference.
Maybe others have a different take on it???

I use .22 mate and find it makes no difference

Thanks Neil, Its that time of year when I start preparing and I am ready to tie a shed load of hook lengths and think I am going to plump for 0.20mm.

Mainline is 6.0lb Maxima and the carp could be stockies up to 20lb +

Always at least 0.20 on the method, more likely 0.22, sometimes 0.25! Don’t use 4 inch hooklengths on the bomb though!?

fair one then just never needed to go that high on breaking strain for hook lengths

i normaly only use 5-6lb main line with a 4-5lb hook lengths and caught carp to 15lbs

The best hook length material for the method is braid without a doubt because of its lack of memory but good strength to diameter ratings. However, braid is banned on most commercial venues because of the potential for damaging fish. Getting the best potential strength of line without stiffness and line memory in the hook length is the difficult part and does make a difference. So, for me 0.18 is the choice on most of my venues but on bagging venue or where very big carp are expected. I understand why many would go for 0.22 or higher.

Thanks for the replies, I am not far wrong with my set up and suppose as per usual its personnel choice and having confidence with what you use. I agree with you Nathan on the lengths for the lead and tend to use upwards of 200mm(8 “).
