Have a word with a certain Mr Billing he is the man to talk to about back shot. You will learn loads if you ask him….

Opinions will differ, i use a longer length of line say 2half ft, then a big back shot half way between pole tip and float. usually an aa, or in a lighter wind a bb . also find I can still get away with a fairly light rig when using big back shots, ie 8ft of water you can get away with a 4+14 .

for a start make sure you use a wire stemmed float for stability!!

You want to have as long a piece of line between the pole tip and the float. You can always cut bits off. Fish the lightest float as possible as again you can always go up. Skimmers are finikie feeders as lighter the better. You could always use a slider float with a stop knot at the pole end. This helps shipping out etc. Try laying on as well as this will give the skimmers confidence in picking up the bait.
When feeding at that depth don’t forget about the tow and where your feed will be on the bottom.
