        Hi All,

Has anybody ever fished Pugneys country park lake in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. I suspect there are some massive bream in there but it is so vast that local knowledge would help.

If anyone knows anything about this lake and how to fish it please private message me or reply to this discussion.

        Many thanks
        Simon

Simon I’ve fished at 25 years ago there used to be a lot of perch in there then all the perch got some disease and died, my brother fishes on the carp syndicate next door and that place throws up some massive bream but the trouble with pugneys is no one fishes it so it gets no anglers bait the waters crystal clear and its full of wild fowl and dick heads paddling with their dogs !! I would love to see someone prebait it and have a proper go

Reply to Anthony waters and B Nudd.

Firstly i think the cormorants have gone. They were there apparently years ago and did some damage but i havent seen any lately.

                Anthony.

I believe this water has huge potential for massive bream and probably some other species (carp / tench) The key will be to pre bait and lots of it for at least a couple of nights before fishing. It will be targeted in the area just after the trees just into the fishing area if you turn left from the car park. I am looking forward to piling this lake with grounbait and i’ve got a feeling if it works i will have 100lb plus. If it doesnt i will blank and i’ll call it a day!!

                Cheers

The big fish theory would seem to tie in with the previous cormorant issues! Knotsford Lagoon nr Otley was rammed with silver and as a kid I used to fish it every week! In later years the black death arrived and it’s now a big carp and tench water.

Good luck with your endeavors mate and please post how you get on!

Had a look around Pugneys today, at the moment I wouldn’t fish this venue for a Gold Clock, the “weed” is disgraceful throughout the whole area allocated. Come on Pugneys it needs sortin.

I’ve not fished it for about 5 years but it holds some really good bream and roach and tench. The roach can be caught on the pole at about 12 metres, you need to sit out in the water though. Don’t use fishmeal based ground baits. Casters, corn and bread and worms are all good. Put a big bed of bait down 15 jaffas. Loose feed over the top. 8 or 10 elastic. 16 or 18 hook. Nothing difficult. Bream are nomadic but there are some in double figures. Tench go to about 8. I’ve been bust off by a carp that was at least 20 but they’re not prolific. The weed can be a problem. You can use a rake or just find a clear spot. It didn’t used to be so bad but it does sit on the bottom by about a foot. Oh, and don’t go on a weekend or in the school holidays! Any more info, pm me
