TF_geepsterParticipantIvan Marks Memorial, River Welland, Deeping Waters, September 23rd, 2012
From John Middleton:
There has been a strong feeling for a number of years that there should be a memorial match for Ivan Marks on a river, as this was where he was accepted as being the “king”.
Gareth Purnell from Total-Fishing ran one in 2006, an event attended by Linda Marks that was well attended and resulted in a stone memorial being erected on the banks of the River Welland….
There was a one-off match on the Witham a year later, and since then the Ivan Marks Memorial has been fished on the Glebe, where Ivan did most of his fishing in his latter years.
The Glebe memorial is an excellent event, well attended and raises good money and this match is in no way to be classed as an alternative.
If it is well supported, we will try to make it an annual event. It is being organised with the full support of Linda & Chris Marks who will be in attendance on the day.
The whole idea came from a conversation between Linda & Trevor Leigh, a good friend of Ivan’s and an old friend of mine from Sheffield. Hence me being press ganged in to helping with the organisation.
The venue is to be the River Welland on the Deeping waters Four-Mile bar to Crowland a favourite stretch of Ivan’s and where his memorial stone is placed. Date Sunday 23rd September 2012

It is a long time since a big match has been organised on a river venue and numbers are hard to forecast but I would hope for 100-150 in light of who it is for.
We will use this thread on the Total-Fishing.com website to keep anglers posted about this new event…..

TF_geepsterParticipantGood morning Guys.
Update on current situation.
Ticket response has not been anywhere near as good as expected & falls far short of intimated response. At current date we have only received 40 bookings which is very disappointing. A decision has been taken that the minimum number of tickets required for the match to proceed is 50. This is considerably less than we originally planned for.
Update on the venue is good. Banks have all been cut & weed cutters are on the river at Crowland Bridge & are due to start weed cutting shortly.
Any one intending to fish this match should contact Trevor Leigh to book their ticket Asap. Tickets must be pre booked & will not be available on the day. If we cannot make the minimum number of 50 confirmed tickets by the end of August the event will unfortunately have to be cancelled.

TF_geepsterParticipantTicket sales have shown a good increase this last two weeks. We have now sent out over 70 & are still waiting for more cheques that are promised. As we are now getting closer to the event we will accept phone bookings to reserve tickets for collection & payment on the morning of the match.
Now for the the not so good news. The match HQ, Abbey Hotel has just changed hands & the new manager had received no details from the outgoing landlord of the arrangements we had. The bottom line is the kitchens are closed for refurbishment & will not be open in time to provide us with the breakfast facility we had arranged. There will be a bar before & after the match, teas & coffee’s will also be available. All other details remain the same. We can only apologise for this but it is totally outwith our control.

TF_BanjoParticipantCan’t comment on its current form. I reckon it’s not been match fished since the inaugural Ivan Marks memorial match on there 7 odd years ago. And the last match on there before that is anyones guess, probably in 1975?
Anyway I went past there today whilst out and about at work and it’s GIN clear! You can see the bottom in 6-8ft of water and I ain’t joking.
Some weeding has been done although from what I could gather no swims have been cut out. The section from Deeping up to Crowland bridge has about half a dozen fishable swims in it. Past Crowland up toward Spalding looks slightly more fished.
Looks more like they’ve cut the verges to allow for off road parking to be honest.
The only places it looks like its been fished regularly is where the bozos from the Eastern Bloc have been eating their catches, two swims I stood at had so many scales on the floor it was crunching underfoot as well as the tell tale remains of their tin foil bar-beques and beer cans. Sad really.
Other than that the place was deserted I didn’t see a single sole apart from 3 old chaps who were fishing in the ‘lake’ at the gravel causeway which is a little dyke/ drain that comes off the river at Crowland – says it all really doesn’t it.
My names down but it ain’t going to be easy.

well I didn’t want to sound like a doom monger but it is what it is isn’t it? Us Fenland anglers didn’t nickname it the River Wellhard in the 1980’s for nothing (and that’s 30 odd years ago now).
To be honest sunday looks very overcast with a south/ south easterly wind? so if you can get pegged in a section with a bit of colour you might be having a decent days fishing if those Bream/ skimmers show up and have a feed.
Also don’t forget the ‘big’ wagglers if you’ve got any, worth a punt for the Roach/ skimmers down the middle (depending on where you’re pegged).
Considering whos memory the event is for I think we should be forced into only using ‘zoomers’ and the ‘swing tip’ 😀
I’m actually looking forwards to it.

TF_CAGloverParticipantSo it appears its going to be one of those matches then, sounds like there might be a few dry nets. Never mind I will enjoy the day whatever, it will make a change from the commercials, and maybe for once I might be the one who draws on some fish (miracles do happen).

TF_manu2Does anyone know what was the winning weight from this match?
Quite a few bailed out early and left including myself. No one had a bite anywhere near me..
Such a shame with near 100 peg turnout and all the hard work that went into clearing all the pegs and cutting the grass from the road down to your peg. -

Where was you pegged mate?
I was on peg 80 up from Crowland bridge. I had 1 perch for 1.5oz and came third in section. On peg 79 was his high lordship Dickus Cleggus MBE he never had a nibble nor did 17 others in my section of 20 which was won with about 8oz, 3oz was 2nd. The section below us was won with 2oz and 1oz for 2nd.Winning weight was around 9lbs (near the bridge?), I think there was a 7lbs and a 2lbs odd. Then it was just bits here n there. I think only 15 anglers troubled the scalesmen, well I know I did they walked a 1/4 mile just to weigh in my solitary Perch. 😀
Shame it fished as it did, easterly wind didn’t help much, clear water, river looked low to me as well despite some rain early in the week.
There was some slight flow in the main channel as I started on the waggler but the wind put paid to that early one after tangle number two. So it was spent on feeder and the bomb.
I hope they organise another just got to pick a venue at the right time, that’s the hard bit.

TF_CAGloverParticipantYeah it was a damn shame about the crap fishing but no doubt we’ll all try again if they get another one up. And well done Banjo and all the others who managed to winkle out something in the poor sections.

TF_geepsterParticipantRiver Welland Ivan Marks Memorial Match Report
Good day yesterday despite the awful weather & a very clear (gin clear in parts) river, reports John Middleton.
We fished either side of Crowland bridge. 2 sections downstream & 3 upstream. 5 x 20 peg sections.
77 fished. I think the forecast weather conditions limited the final number as we had a few no shows from the expected 90+ reserved tickets.
A bitterly cold east wind & heavy rain later in the day made it hard going. No big weights & bream failed to show along the whole match length.
First & second places coming from pegs either side of the bridge. Match winner Bob Walker from Sheffield fished peg 41 directly upstream of Crowland Bridge. Chopped worm on the pole accounted for a weight of 9lb. 10oz of mainly perch. Several larger fish were lost & Bob reckoned he should have had a weight closer to 20lbs.
Second placed angler David Stratford-Way quiver tipped peg 40 downstream of the bridge to take 7 lbs. exactly of perch, tench & an eel of 2 lbs.+ Lost fish were a feature on these pegs & David lost a large tench estimated at
6/7 lbs. at the net.The presentation was well attended & Linda Marks presented the winners trophy’s. It was an enjoyable trip down memory lane & numerous requests were made at the after match gathering for the event to be run again next year.
The support appears to be there for this to become an annual event & if that is the case both Trevor Leigh & I are willing to commit to organising next years event.
Results.
1st Bob Walker 9lbs. 10oz.
2nd David Stratford-Way 7lbs. 0oz.
3rd Terry Jackson 3lbs. 10oz
4th Rich Reynolds 3lbs. 1oz
5th Chris Buckingham 2lbs. 11oz
6th Mick Cobb 2lbs. 9oz
