Those bitterling sound just like another piscatorial alien, beginning with “c”.

The “potential impacts on native fisheries” are a bit of a giveaway.

I’m sure I caught one on a local club water recently? Looked link a roach but with no red fins.

Bitterling were once prolific in the Lanky canal in the 1970’s….

Disappeared without trace in no time, wonder if the Swan Mussel population fell too at that time?

They’re present in large numbers in one of the lake’s I fish regularly, and are a complete pain in the ar$e! They’re very adept at bait robbing and make fishing with softer baits nigh on impossible in the warmer months.

They have been about since I was a boy (well over 55 years now!) but I have never seen one yet alone caught one. I remember reading about them in ‘The Observers Book of Freshwater Fish’ back in the 50’s.

I see that they have wels catfish and zander on the list, why not Cyprinus carpio then? Only been here a few hundred years.
