TF_JohnHI have always been sceptical about the value of practicing for matches as invariably when a number of anglers fish a lake it changes. I think it was Keith Arthur who said the only thing that doesnt change is the depth!
Last weekend saw me match free so I could enjoy a couple of days fishing the Glebe ( I have been a member for a few years now and the fishing is well worth the drive).
I settled on lake three and had loads of carp on the lead and JPZ the 10mm reds, the carp there love these and the green ones too..
Sunday saw me on the same lake 5 pegs away from my Saturday swim and despite 3 hours on the lead and JPZ/PELLET/CORN I never had a rap!!
Paste too proved to be a waste of time both days, I just kept foulhooking them, they seemed to come to it but not take it. Kriled maggot was deadly day 2 with a dozen 10lb plus lumps on it before I ran out of bait. Inormally dont use it on this lake as there are too many small perch. Corn then scored for me on the opposite margin with some even bigger fish, having tried to catch on paste first down that edge..
Each day I had 150lb plus. Anyone thinking about joining, dont hesitate!
I suppose the moral is, dont assume having practiced that on the day the same things will work. Both days only the odd angler or 2 was on the lake, its peace and quiet all the way absolute bliss. -

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantIts amazing the difference and have you ever noticed how everyone can be catching on a venue then suddenly everyone stops catching together at once ?

TF_PaddyJohn – i am on either pool 5, or 6 (i think that is correct) on Wednesday for a friendly knock up with a few other folks from other companies in the same trade as me.
I was thinking of taking the pole and a feeder rod.
Do you know anything about these pools?
Do i have to use there pellets and ground bait etc?
Do these pools go up in the water styley?
Cheers, Pad. -

TF_JohnHPaddy, no restriction on coarse pellets you can use, Maruku preferred and I have definately found they like green swin stim pellets and groundbait. Feeder to far bank with pellets or maggot and groundbait works on all lakes. Depth is about 6 foot so shallow not so good but does work on all lakes. Tight over, and I mean tight is the way. Margin lines can be deadly too. Corn is a consistent bait here and also on the top 4 rig which should see you around the bottom of the near shelf.
Paste is usually good too, JPZ definately work. but not always. Sometimes you can catch on them down the edge over corn, or on the top 4 over corn.
Meat is banned as is method feeder, you must have 18 inch hook links on free running feeders.
One piece of advice, keep feeding they will come. Skimmers too are well worth catching, I spoke to Andy Dare last week who had 90 odd lb of them on lake 1. -

TF_steviedfish not feeding during matches is not new.
back in the dim and distant past (’76 i think) fishing the middle level and at the week end you couldn’t get a bite until after 3pm. one local old chap told me that was normal, he put it down to 3.00 being the normal time the matches finished. come half three it was a bite a bung where the keep nets had been.
food for thought. -
