Having been away from the match seen for a few years, I have welcomed the opportunity to take my 6 year old son to a number of fisheries over the last few months.

However, the inconsistency in approach towards welcoming and encouraging children into our sport has been striking.

This has ranged from free fishing for under 12s as long as they are with an adult, to having to pay 2 full price tickets for one rod.

This inconsistency is not limited to ticket pricing. The demeanour and approach of fisheries has varied greatly. Some fishery owners have been interested and engaged, whilst others have been sullen and uncommunicative.

To a degree, that is a reflection of life and it would not be possible to guarantee a great experience for every family. However, I do wonder if we could do more to ensure that the experience that families receive is as positive as possible.

I understand the problem as I also have a 7 year old grandson.
Unfortunately it is up to the commercials fishery owners what concessions are they willing to make where young anglers, OAP’s or disabled anglers is concerned.
The cheapest way to teach young anglers is to enrol them in their local angling club or, better still, teach them some proper fishing craft by taking them to the nearest stretch of river.
I also would like to assume that in the long run it may be in the interest of the commercials owners that they make concessions for young budding anglers.

They should charge per peg full stop, its like if the missus wants to come down and have a wiggle with a top kit for half an hour you have paid for your peg anyway there not doing any harm there only spoiling your peg 😮

I don’t know where you live but if its anywhere near Liphook in Hampshire you should bring your children to one of the MBK Leisure http://www.mbkleisures.co.uk Junior Open matches held weekly throughout the summer. The kids love them, there are trophies for the top 3 in each age group and prizes for everyone which are well in excess of the £7 entry fee.
