I was fishing a local knock up on a canal yesterday which fished very well with 54lb of fish caught between 9 of us. Whilst weighing in someone commented “now ain’t that better than a commercial”… Which bemused me, as it thought it was exactly the same as a commercial, if not worse as we had all caught on the same method from the same part of the canal (down the track) catching the same fish (nothing bigger than a couple of ounces) . The winner had 250+ fish from an end peg! we had all had 100+ fish each. We had parked almost behind our pegs. The only difference I could see was that we didn’t pay £7 peg fees…. Or have I misunderstood something?

I guess if you don’t like commercials you’ll take any opportunity to knock them, but please don’t tell me there is a difference… They are both fish racing.

In essence yes its exactly the same and probably even more consistent than a commercial.

To me a “commercial” is a man made fishery created for and run as a business. Usually well stocked to attract and provide plenty of sport to the visiting angler.
A canal on the other hand is waterway created during the industrial revolution to provide a means of transporting various goods from A to B via barges. Fish are just a bi product which found their way into the waterway by various natural means.
I don’t see any connection between the two other than the fact that anglers fish them, apart from that they are completely different. You don’t see any tackle shops or cafe’s on a canal towpath do you. Yes some of the newer commercials may still be a “fish race” but most commercials are now firmly established and anglers are faced with the challenge of catching “wised up” fish.
If anglers get enjoyment from catching 200 2oz fish from a canal then fine, many others prefer the new breed of fishery and I’m not knocking either one but for the guy on your’e match to compare the two in my opinion is pointless for the reasons I have stated, the two have no comparison.

Think you would find that the silver fish fishing on many commerials venues is fare better and consistent than the very best natural canals. These commercial silver fish have generally never been targeted by anglers and to some extent they are still wild fish in the same way as those fish on the naural canal.

Try holding a few silver fish only matches on commercials and see what the results are. Think you might get a very big shock. Thats if you can hold yourself back from also targeting the carp!

Several commercial venues i can think of hold silver fish only matchs especially in the winter. Amazing fishing when compared to any natural canal venue i,ve ever fished.

And yes I agree with “true blue” commercials are rammed full of silvers too and usually of a much better stamp than their natural water cousins, personally I see no reason to fish canals where generally you’re vehicle is at risk of being stolen (I know you say you parked in sight of them in this instance), you have to be on constant alert for bikers steaming down the towpath, dogs and dog mess etc etc. I have been victim to all of these examples, car stolen, pole broken by a biker and dog crap many times – Natural Venues? You can keep them!!!
