More than one-and-a-quarter million anglers in England paying £22 million a year for fishing rod licences are being short changed because the money is not being spent to maintain and develop freshwater fisheries, as the law requires.

Same as all vehicle taxes . Goes in big pot and not directly spent on what it’s first designed for . 😡

They will probably spend the money on bird sancturarys like they did on the Somerset Levels

Well they certainly haven’t bought a decent printer. Don’t know anyone who’s received their licence yet!

flood relief and sewage discharge affecting drinking water, etc. would be my guess?

nevertheless, if this has been the case – then it might provide ammo for the AT to become jointly involved or outsourced to AT? Though, the public liabilities might outweigh the benefits in some worst case scenario or legal case?

I’ve had a few interesting conversations with the EA and others about this issue over the last few days. The EA is undergoing an internal ‘Fisheries Refresh’. In doing so it’s kinda admitting that something needs to change and that more transparency is needed about where anglers’ licence money is being spent. About two thirds of the fisheries income comes from anglers (about £22 million) – about a third from government grant in aid (£10 million). The results are due for publication in the summer. A body of angling interests including the Angling Trust has been consulted during the process. They are looking for direct line of sight between the head of fisheries and area fisheries officers. I believe it will be published later this year, and hopefully acted upon.
