Syd’s still fishing, but he doesn’t come on the Yare anymore.

I see him in the tackle shop occasionally.

Totally agree used to go straight to back page every month to get my Syd Fix. Reckon we should start a bring back Syd campaign the bloke just painted a fantastic picture with words. Actually met him once and told him I thought he was the funniest writer of angling stories ever, his humble reaction of `oh you think so ` thank you just confirmed that the image of the man painted by his writing was sock on.

              BRING BACK SYD 🙂

I thought it was Angling Plus Syd wrote in. Met him a few times at the Evesham festival , he used to do the commentary on a couple of days, very funny , remember him fishing next to Mark Addy one day at Evesham and he kidded Mark he had caught a good eel , plenty of splashing the landing net about. That was before Match angling took over the sponsorship. The owner of the tackle shop at Ludham told me a few weeks ago Syd was ok fishing the commies I think. Some great memories of Syd at Evesham , he had a name for loads the anglers.

Man in a coma, one saddle Randell, and I think he called me the great northern railway, in the mag anyway. It was a bit more industrial in real life lol.

He wrote for both match fishing and angling plus.

In my humble opinion, the problem with all fishing mags is a lack of humour.

It’s all sponsored anglers describing ‘how to’ or ‘how I’, and is monumentally boring.

When there is an attempt at humour, or even just telling it like it is, it seems a bit forced.

People like Syd, Frank Barlow, Andy Love etc painted a picture with words, and because they were there every week/month, you felt as though you got to know the characters.

That’s why most of us turned to their page first…

Please pass on my best wishes too, I loved to read his rumblings as they often mirrored my own experiences.
Just shows how important humour is, we think we are fishing for cash, not fun, too often.
