For years I have used a crows foot to secure my rigs. However I placed the loop knot over the crows foot knot itself not on the single thickness of elastic above the knot. I use black or purple hydro. I never had a cut off.
I was persuaded to try the new Preston Dacron connectors but on 2 occasions had a cut off just above the knot, I was in no doubt that the Dacron cut through,
The problem with crows foot was removing the rig at the end of the session, I just could not free the knot as it was bedded deep in the elastic knot so invariably cut it off and remade the rig again. Also with a wind in my face line would sometimes trap on the pole or kinder pot.
Over winter I have refined the connector to hopefully make it stronger. Instead of Dacron I use power gum. I tie a crows foot in the elastic and loop over the power gum over the knot not on a single thickness of elastic above the knot, To cover the knot I use a piece of catty elastic which is fine but hard to get on as its tight over the knot. Last week I spotted korda helicopter rig tubing which is perfect and easier to put on.
Fished over the weekend in a gale and never had a problem.
I have concluded Dacron is not for lumps on heavy elastic power gum is better.
Anyone else had the same problem?

            John,

PM me your address and I will send you some homemade ones for big elastics.

I have always used stonfo connectors and have never had a problem.
Last year I swapped to Preston dacron to follow fashion – what a mistake – cut-throughs as you describe.
I couldn’t swap back to connectors quick enough.
              A case of if it’s not broken….

                Thanks Mike details sent.
Nick, I spoke to the Preston boys at Whiteacres about this problem after my first cut off and Tommy P assured me that these connectors were fine. After a second problem they were binned.
I should add that I tend to fish Bolingey and Glebe in quiet corners with short pole, often just a top kit for doubles so not you typical match sort of fishing. Any rig weakness is quickly apparent.

I have made my own connectors (and for others) for quite a a few years now. The Preston ones IMO are crap as the dacron isn’t stiff so doesn’t stand away from the pole tip, therefore does not keep the line away from your topkit.

Alan Scotthorne on Tightlines a few months back slides a thicker piece of elastic over his main elastic to prevent the elastic from fraying at the point where you connect your dacron connector.

Helicopter beads/Buffer beads and 30lb flyline backing is all you need.

Mike, sounds like we have sort of come to the same conclusion. Not sure about sliding over more rubber, I like to check what is going on with the elastic!!
Will certainly try yours out and let you know my thoughts.
                    Thanks.
