I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. If you need some weight close to the hook its probably best if you use short links as its undesirable, in my opinion, to put shot on fine hook links. That said I have fished with some top anglers who fish direct on all their rigs, the argument being, “what’s the point of fishing fine when you have a loop to loop knot a few inches from the bait”, usually on the eye line of approaching fish?
I must admit this makes a lot of sense so I err on the long side. Obviously for the method feeder this argument is irrelevant short is best.
Having said all of the above many top anglers still use 6 inch to 12 inch hook links and do very well, hence my opening statement!
