Just in, see the sixth paragraph…. mmmmmm….

Fish ‘O’ Mania Qualifier Willinghurst Fishery

Stuart Ballard (Maver Midlands Dynamite), a Construction based Manager from Walsall was crowned the winner from the Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier held at Willinghurst Fishery, Guildford, Surrey on Wednesday 16th June. Stuart drew peg 7 on the unfancied Cherry tree Lake, so had to work hard, pole fishing paste at 13m and 14m in 5 different areas to catch bream and carp to 6lb sporadically through the match. Stuart caught his first carp, a 4 lb fish, after twelve minutes with his catch rate steady throughout, although he did have a lean spell mid match.

Stuart went on to catch fourteen carp, the best being 6 lbs and around 12 lbs of skimmers to 2 lb to win with 68-4-0, which proved to be enough to finally win a place in the Fish ‘O’ Mania final after years of trying.

While the venue undoubtedly fished hard it did make for a close finish, and looked as though Darren Cox (Kamasan Starlets/Garbolino) was well on his way to a place in the final this time around after so many near misses. Darren drew on the ‘point’ of the New Lake and made a brisk start catching newly stocked small carp on poled pellet.

Everything was plain sailing for him, but in the fourth hour the wind took a turn for the worst, and he struggled to keep in touch with the shoal ending up an agonising thirteen ounces short of victory with 67-7-0.

Third place went to Alan Tuck from Woodbridge who also drew unfancied peg 5 on Oak Lake and pole fished corn and pellet to take carp up to 9lb for 62-10-0. Team match anglers Tim Drabowa (Fox Match Stanjay) and Paul Goldstraw (Fox Match Stanjay) were fourth and fifth respectively with 60-0-0 and 57-4-0.

Unfortunately the fourteenth Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier at Willinghurst Fishery left its mark for some of the wrong reasons, because thirty anglers failed to turn up on the day, which left those that did turn out, and the Angling Trust organisers, with several logistical problems.

It led to too many vacant pegs, of which nine were considered to be potential match winners. Thirteen anglers from the reserve list boosted the turnout to one hundred and thirteen but that still left a shortfall of seventeen on the day.

The stiff breeze made it difficult to control long poles on some of the lakes, which may have had a bearing on the overall result. The big weights of previous Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifiers held at Willinghurst just did not materialise, and only 52 anglers troubled the scalesmen and one whole section also failed to weigh in.

What can be said that has not already been said about this problem Gareth?
On a positive note, it’s nice to see my old mate Alan Tuck still doing the business.

It beats me why people dont turn up after initially spending the money, sure things are tight right now, but a quick call to cancel would have given someone else the opertunity to fish,

I bet there are a lot of local anglers that are kicking themselves right now for not turning up on the off chance.

Its sad really when you think so many people applied and never got tickets

There should be a phone number on all tickets for Fisho qualifiers. If you dont want to fish or have a problem getting to the qualifier on the morning of the match. A phone call is all that is needed to let the organizers know your not attending. At least then anglers can be contacted and replace the no shows. If those anglers dont attend after getting a ticket and dont phone to give up the ticket. Then they should be banned from entering th competition. Its not difficult to make a phone call if you dont want to fish or have a problem getting to the venue. In an age of mobile phones there should be no excuses. Especially when so many other anglers want tickets!

I am not going to Woodlands on Saturday. I have mailed At today to tell them, which gives them the day tomorrow to contact the next on the list, and give them time the time to get ready.

On the Wilinghurst match, they have suffered KHV as most know, and are obviously stuggeling to get it back to how it was.
One whole section blanked, in June, it must be bad!
T hats why Sarah at Barford decided not to have a round this year, one bad match and it gives you more bad publicity that good!

Phone calls don’t cost much emails are even cheaper.

The current economic climate is rough for sure but a little forward planning and some of the no shows could have got there money back, 26 quid when things are tight goes a long way.

I think the real reason for not going for most was, a long journey to possibly blank, there was also a lot of talk flying around at how bad this was going to be which is a shame really, its a nice fishery the lads are working hard at it, that can be seen by the amount of work going on, a few more fish and they will have it sorted.

You did the right thing Nigel and i would not expect anything else from you.

However, i do suspect that the main number of no shows will be occational match anglers and club anglers who where having a punt. The vest majority of hardened regular match anglers would turn up and fish even if the venue was crap. Thats what most regular match anglers do. Week in, week out!

I might be wrong. However, it would be interesting to know which anglers did not attend this Fisho qualifier.

Thanks Steve, this is the first time ever that i have decided not to go. I did break down on the way to the Fish ‘o’ on the Nene once, thats the only other time i havent turned up (and i still phoned!)

If those 30 no shows had contacted At the day before, the next 30 on the list could have been contacted.
If i was 30th on the reseve list, i wouldn’t travel all that way not know if i was gong to get on, but would go if i knew i would get on.

Not surprised 30 people didnt bother turning up to Willinghurst. Its not exactly the best venue going is it ! I spoke to a couple of guys who fished it last night and they think it should be dropped from the qualifiers altogether because its so rubbish.. They had the ear of a very senior person in the AT aswell !!

Dave, did Roly and Sparky tell you they were fishing in mine and Nicks place for Duanes match ? I had problems so made sure someone was there to fill my space.

I like Nigel was one of the 30 ‘no shows’ due to having problems with a shortage of staff at work

However I the same as Nigel again had emailed the Angling Trust giving them 48 hours notice that I wouldn’t be attending and the reasons why.

Did the Angling Trust attempt to fill these positions.
